Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal
Sustainable Development Goals 15 Life on Land This goal comes under environment pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing on protest, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystem, sustainably manage forest, combat desertification, and halt and reserve land desertification and halt and reserve land degradation and halt biodiversity losses. SDG 15 has total 12 targets and 14 indicators. This goal was reviewed at the high level political forum in July 2018. This goal follows following targets: 1. By 2030, ensure conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and fresh water ecosystem. 2. By 2030, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forest land deforestation, restore forest and afforestation. 3. Take urgent action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of Flora and fauna and address their demand and supply. The indicators for this goal are: 1. Forest area as a proportion of total land area 2. Proportion of important sites 3. Forest area annual net change rare 4. Above ground biomass stock in forest 5. Proportion of traded wildlife that was poached or trafficked. 21% area is under forest cover. Out of which 5% are protected areas, 2.4% global land area, but India is home to 8% world's recorded species. 1,401 Flora and fauna species are threatened. 44% of the total workforce in India is employed in agriculture out of which 52% of indias total land under agriculture is underrated and rain fed. Incase of Nepal, in this goal certain achievements have been made. Key biodiversity area covered by proteced area increased from 33.1% to 46.1%in 2018. From 30.5% to 43.2% in fresh water areas, from 32.9% to 44.7% in mountain area and deterioration value of red listed drops from 0.82 in 1993 to 0.73 in 2019. Still, desertification and degradation has greatly affected forest and mountains, and in nutshell whole ecosystem. Poor alignment of target and goals with existing international agreements and political processes continues. There's lack of effective implementation, and there's always conflicts between goals and targets. Lack of quality data for indicators, and bureaucracy has always hindered in the implementation of policies. Every time when I hear the news of degradation it reminds me of quote by Mahatma Gandhi, " Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not every man's greed." Having said that, people are being aware themselves with increasing threat. They are pressurizing for accurate, measurable, clear data for acheivable targets and indicators. Communication has established as pillars for the progress of this goal. Let's get hopeful and let's rise for good deeds. Let's use resources sustainably for today and for future. |

Hello Asmita, this is mentor Taehyun!
Thank you for the series articles on sustainable development. Unlike the last time, this time it's about life on the ground! It is a matter that most countries can relate to, and at the same time, it seems to be a very important issue in terms of ecological diversity, food chain, and so on. For sustainable development, so many things must be guaranteed!
Thank you for the report!
Green cheers!
