CLIMATE CHANGE AND PEST INFESTATION ON AGRICULTURE (Free report)

Climate change is occurring at an alarming rate with shifts in global climatic phenomena with several impacts on human health, economy, and environment and representing the biggest challenge for the future of humanity and the life-support systems. Climate variability and extremes events have negative effects on many aspects of agriculture. Along with direct consequence on the food production system, climate change has and will have an impact on the species involved in the agricultural system. 

From the largest mammal to the smallest insect, every species plays a distinct and important role on Earth. Whether found in your backyard or across the world, they maintain a vital balance in habitats and resources we depend on. Changing climate variables can either increase or decrease the pest population of both beneficial insects and harmful insects. Climate change can interfere with crop production via modification of the population and function of pests and pathogens. 

Insect pest population is also expected to change as with the change in the climate. Climate variables like temperature, humidity, precipitation, etc. are the factors for the growth, development, and multiplication of creatures such as insects, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Climate change results in changes in diversity and abundance of insect pests, the geographical distribution of insect pests. It increases overwintering insects, rapid population growth, and the introduction of alternative host plants. It can have changes in host plant resistance, increase risk of invasive pest species, and the emergence of insect-transmitted diseases.

Rising temperature, modified precipitation patterns, disturbed gaseous composition of the atmosphere, etc. are causing the change in the population, mobility, and behavior of insect pests. Each additional degree of temperature rise could cause yield losses from insect pests to increase by a further 10-25%. Climate change has increased the pest population and their damage potential by expanding distribution, enhancing survivability, and allowing to develop the adaptability of insect pests. Increased global temperature will also influence the phenology of insects including early arrival of insect pests in their agricultural habitats and the emergence time of a range of insect pests.

Impacts of climate change on agricultural insect pests will directly or indirectly have serious impacts on crop growth, production, and agricultural systems also in the pest management scheme. All these impacts have ultimate effects on agriculture and food security and have put forward new challenges for pest management. Long-term monitoring of population levels and insect behavior, particularly in identifiably sensitive regions, may provide some of the first indications of a biological response to climate change.

The theme of Earth Day 2020 is ¡°Climate Action¡± which is celebrated on 22nd April as it commemorates the 50th anniversary this year. Let¡¯s inform people about both the global and local impacts of species extinction, promote concepts and values that encourage us to understand the role of each species in maintaining ecosystem balance and empower our community with civic engagement skills necessary to protecting biodiversity at the local and global level.  We can also be a conscious consumer and tourist by participating in ecotourism, find eco-friendly and ethical alternatives to our home or business¡¯s pesticides, herbicides and cleaning products, remove harmful litter from our local environment, organize invasive species removal projects and designate protected areas where native species can thrive, urge our local representatives to support species protection by signing petitions and writing letters and participate in the event to demonstrate a collective public commitment to species protection and climate action!

    As you well indicated in your article, climate change exerts deleterious impacts not only on humans but also animals and plants living on the earth. I can even feel it is a lot hotter in the summer and colder in the winter than it was 20 years ago when I was 5 years old. Among many negative impacts, agricultural problems would be one of the most serious problems because agriculture is directly connected to surviving. Therefore, it is essential to care for the environmental health!

Climate change due to global warming, and temperatures are still making ecological changes that no one can predict.
