(Thematic Report) Deforestation: Calculating the environmental cost of one of human activities.

by Kushal Naharki | 10-05-2020 20:33 recommendations 0

Deforestation can be defined as the cutting down of trees, or the destruction of forest. Forests cover more than 30% of the Earth's land surface. Worldwide, forests provide 13.4 million people with jobs in the forest sector, and another 41 million people have jobs related to forests. Although trees and forest are so much important to us, the deforestation is quite high the world.  The world¡¯s rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. The Earth loses 18.7 million acres of forests per year, which is equal to 27 soccer fields every minute, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The rate of deforestation equals to loss of 27 football fields every minute. If the current rate of deforestation continues, it will take less than 100 years to destroy all the rainforests on the earth. The scale of tree destruction, much of it done illegally, poses a grave threat to tackling both climate change and the massive global decline in wildlife. The World Bank estimates that about 3.9 million square miles (10 million square km) of forest have been lost since the beginning of the 20th century.

Causes of Deforestation:

Agriculture and over grazing of cattles

        Development Activities

Commercial use of forest products like wood and Mining

        Forest Fires

Impacts of Deforestation

        Increased Soil Erosion and landslides

Desertification of land and loss of soil fertility

Disruption of water cycles resulting Drought and Flood

Loss of Habitat of wild lives and reduced biodiversity

        Climate Change

        Disruption of Livelihoods

Solutions:

        Afforestation: Lets plant trees

        Awareness of people

Implementation of strict rules and regulation

Hi Kushal Naharki, this is a mentor Sang Su Lee.

Wow!! 27 football fields in a minute... This is so crazy. Trees are so valuable to humans because they provide oxygen for us to breathe. However, people do not know that they are so valuable because they are abundant right at this moment!!! People do not know how to thank something that is around them... They get so used to it... Thank you for your research. This indeed shocked me.

Although, the forest area in Nepal is increasing in last decade, deforestation is a major problem worldwide.

Hello Kushal Naharki, this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for your estimate of environmental costs associated with deforestation! It was really interesting! You can quantitatively interpret environmental costs, but as in this article, qualitative estimates will also serve as valuable data. Now, to see if we can justify deforestation, we have to consider whether deforestation has more to lose than humans gain, which is certainly hard to determine in terms of quality! However, I think it would be enough to mention that there are so many environmental losses!

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
