I facilitated a webinar on Covid 19 and Environment by YouthLead on the topic "What Youth Can Learn About the Environment Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic" on 30th April . I would like to share a few key points from my presentations in this reported. Youths In Environment • Young people constitute a large part of the world¡¯s population • They will have to live longer with the consequences of current environmental decisions than will their elders. • Future generation affected by their decision • Young people can play an active role in protecting and improving the environment. • They can change the future of the society with their well being and courageous behavior. COVID 19 Emergence The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19. COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Did you know that around 60 per cent of all infectious diseases in humans are zoonotic, as are 75 per cent of all emerging infectious diseases, in other words they come to us via animals? Factors causing zoonosis emergence • Deforestation and other Land Use Changes • Intensified agriculture and livestock production • Climate Change • Antimicrobial resistance • Intensified agriculture and livestock production Corona virus: A message from nature? • Human activity and ecosystems • Changes in Environment • Changes in pathogen hosts • Changes in pathogens ¡°We are intimately interconnected with nature, whether we like it or not. If we don¡¯t take care of nature, we can¡¯t take care of ourselves.¡±- UNEP Executive Director, Inger Andersen Next side of the coin: Affirmative changes • Pollution and greenhouse gas emissions have gone down as countries try to contain the spread of the new coronavirus by lockdown and other national restrictions. • It is not the change we are causing but just holding the activities for some period. • Is this just a fleeting change or it is sustainable? Impacts of COVID19 Accepting the deaths of the vulnerable and extreme restrictions on everyday life is not a realistic or reliable way to fight environmental challenges. • Healthcare waste • Food Insecurity • Mental Health • Economic Breakdown |
