Morocco is taking a huge step in the field of renewable energy-run, drinkable water, and irrigation with the largest plant in Agadir for MAD 4 billion. In partnership with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and BMCE Bank, Spanish company Abengoa will help with the financial and technical part of this big project! Abengoa is actually an international company that uses innovative technology for sustainability development. On the site, the work is progressing and is already 65% complete. Concerning commercial operations, they are expected to start in 2021. The plant will produce initially 275,000 m3 of desalinated water per day, to reach later on a maximum capacity of 450,000 m3 per day. The desalination plant also provides the possibility of being powered by wind energy, which promotes the exploration of sustainable energy in Africa. This amazing project reflects my country’s concern about the environment. With a wide variety of projects and measures, the king of Morocco is actually fighting in order to preserve the magnificence of my dear country. The project NOOR in Ourzazate, which is the largest solar station in the world, is also a perfect example of this engagement toward sustainability. The region Sous-Massa is an arid region so the project would supply drinking waste to 2.3 people living there. It is also where agriculture is a major economic activity. Agadir is a very touristic place with more than a million tourists in 2019. I am more than proud to be part of a country where the respect of environment comes before the economic growth. I would like to salute all the engineers, workers and investor that believed in this project. It is definitely the beginning of a new arena. We can always turn the hourglass upside down; it just takes big actions and projects. Let’s make the world a better place! |

Water scarcity has been a serious problem for many countries. There is only 1% of water available for humans to drink. I was relieved that there are many plants and factories trying to convert undrinkable water to drinkable water after having read your article. Desalination process was blamed because it takes so much energy to desalinate sea water. However, with your method (mentioned in the passage, wind powered desalination), it would be able to make sustainable line to produce drinkable water.

Thank you for the report about your country. I'm glad to hear that Morocco is now planning to make a desalination plant works with eco-friendly energy source! Desalination is essential to people who live in a desert, but it uses a lot of energy. Morocco's solution for energy is appropriate for the country's situation! Using renewable energy for a plant is good, and I hope many countries around the world use renewable energy!
