Free Topic- WORLD FUTURE ENERGY SUMMIT 2020

by Anishka Jha | 10-02-2020 02:43 recommendations 0

As a part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, The World Future Energy Summit, was held last month. It is an annual event hosted every year by Masdar, a renewable energy company of UAE.

The event held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) is a global platform to boost the world¡¯s sustainable development and innovation by different companies.

The summit serves as an annual meeting point for governments, utilities and innovators as well as energy companies who are working towards driving new ideas and technologies and bringing in transition to clean energy and sustainable living.

There were forum speakers from different energy sectors who raised many important issues related to renewables and their stable usage. Some of the highlights of the speech were-

Ensuring grid stability as an increasing mix of technologies is connected to the grid is imperative. Stable grids must be able to mix conventional energy, nuclear, renewables, hybrid technologies and storage. This stability will become an even greater challenge as more electric vehicles are introduced, particularly around expected peak times for charging. At both utility scale and smaller scale, what needs to be in place to ensure grids stable and ready?

Governments are investing in new renewable supplies of energy to meet rising demand and clean energy targets. Equally, governments want people to curb usage to reduce the demand side. Accepting that both are equally important, how do governments balance the costs of increasing supply with the savings that will come from behavioural change for demand? And where is the tipping point where this is no longer an issue of concern?

One of the presentation in the forum provided an update on the largest virtual battery plant in the world, introduced by Abu Dhabi last year. The plant, that is operational for the last 12 months from a single site, has enough storage for 6 hours of energy.

To conclude, such environment forums held every year by UAE, definitely places the country in the forefront in its efforts towards finding sustainable energy solutions.

    Hello Anishka

I can see that UAE is putting some effort for sustainable development. Such a big transition gives the government and industry sites many homeworks, and some of them are not easy. Therefore this kind of summit will help to determine the destination of the development. I hope this kind of productive program is held in many other nations, and the earth as a whole can achieve to form sustainable development.

Thank you for the great report!

    Hey Anishka!
    It's Lisa once again.

    What a great event here!
I think it's really meaningful how there are more and more forums related to the environment that are taking place worldwide. In traditional international politics, it was usually the government officials and experts who engaged in those events and nowadays, the participation range is further expanded to include civic organizations, individuals and more. I think this is a great phenomenon of how people from different sectors are given chances to speak!

Yet, my worry (and this is also something that's shared by Greta Tunberg) is that these international forums are taking place at the cost of carbon emissions from planes. Greta has been turning down the offers from number of environmental forums worldwide for the very reason. I think it's great that the event gets to gather people but this is also something that we should think about more!

Enjoyed reading it and keep it up:)
