Thematic Report – Marine Life – Over-fishing WWF defines Over-fishing as, ¡°Over-fishing occurs when more fish are caught than the population can replace through natural reproduction. Gathering as many fish as possible may seem like a profitable practice, but over-fishing has serious consequences. It is estimated that if the current levels of over-fishing continues, the edible fish will vanish from the ocean in 40 years. The fishing fleets are much higher in numbers than the oceans can sustain thus it causes more fish to be caught. Atlantic Halibut, the Monkfish, all sharks, and Blue Fin Tuna are basically threatened by over-fishing. Nearly one thirds of total fish population is over-fished. When too many fish are taken out of the ocean it creates an imbalance that can erode the food web and lead to a loss of other important marine life, including vulnerable species like sea turtles and corals. In order to contain this menace we must create more protected areas for marine life. Stop trawling [this was explained in detail by our mentor]. Traditional fishing methods are more sustainable. By educating the people over-fishing may be curbed. Further by raising awareness & spreading campaigns this may be controlled. I firmly believe that our generation is blessed with technology that strengths us to do the impossible. We have the power, will & we share responsibility. Many such menaces may be controlled if there is will to contain this. Making laws & rules is one aspect but taking responsibility is the key to success. So, friends lets join the hands together and make fishing a sustainable business. Thanks for reading. |

Hello Rohan
Issue about over fishing seems to be getting more and more serious, since there are large demands for fish all over the world. I think the key idea that people should keep in mind is that there would be literally no more fish in the ocean if over fishing continues to happen. And that future is not far away, actually accelerating. Fortunately as you mentioned, human society has developed enough to treat this issue in effective way. I hope some productive technologies and policies are implemented so the balance between marine ecosystem and fishing industry is maintained.
Thank you for the great report.

Hey Rohan!
This is your mentor Lisa.
First of all, it's so great to have you back in this Tunza community.
We missed you greatly!
And thank you for trying to catch up with your missed reports:)
Please do continue your work!
Now, regarding your article, I certainly do agree that overfishing is a major threat imposed on the marine ecosystem worldwide.
We need to be able to develop proper and sustainable fishing methods and more fundamentally I think that we need to change our mindset have more respect for the environment and less of our selfish greed.
Lots of points where I share same opinion as you:)
Great work!

Hello Rohan ,
I hope you are doing good.
Overfishing is surely causing problems in our ecosystem.
But i somewhere heard about people introducing fishes which are made from stem cells artificially. This may bring a lot of good changes
Thank you for this report
