[Thematic Report] [Food and the Environment]

When we hear the word "food", we almost never consider the sustainability behind it. There are a multitude of goals associated with sustainable farming, and the main ones include low environmental impact, upholding animal welfare, and protection of public health. Through a combination of these goals, we can carry out farming practices that are sustainable to our world.

The main goal - a low environmental impact - in essence aims to minimize the carbon dioxide emissions that come about as a result of food production. Animal products such as beef contribute a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions. The animals that the product comes from (cows) releases methane, which is harmful to the environment. In general, sustainable food aims to prevent the waste and damage of natural resources. The ideal outcome of sustainable farming is where all negative impacts are considered and minimised while producing food in the most economically profitable method possible.

The secondary goal - upholding animal welfare - considers the ethical aspect of sustainable farming. Specifically, it aims to protect the animals' health and wellbeing. This can be achieved through various measures such as allowing animals to roam freely instead of confining them in cages. Although the care provided towards animals may not directly impact food production, sustainable farming considers the ethical aspects of animal grazing. The ultimate outcome of sustainable farming in its ethical sense would be to eliminate all sources of pain that animals are subject to during the process of food production.

The tertiary goal - protection of public health - considers the health of humans (consumers of food). Whilst sustainable food aims to achieve a multitude of goals, it is essential that the food is safe and healthy for consumers. In doing so, sustainable farmers minimize the usage of harmful chemicals and pesticides that may be detrimental to our health.

Sustainable farming encompasses a myriad of goals, and I have discussed the ones I believe to be the primary in the process. We as individuals who consume food can take steps to live a more sustainable life. The main step is the decrease our consumption of animal based products (fish, meat, and dairy). Currently the animal industry constitutes one of the largest carbon footprints each year. Although the idealistic outcome would be a vegan lifestyle, simply decreasing the consumption of animal based products a little bit can be helpful to sustainable farming practices. Try to consider eating vegetables and fruits over animal products in your next meal!

    Hello Jaewon!
    This is your mentor Lisa.

It's so great to hear from you:)
I personally am also interested in animal rights and animal welfare and of course food is an important agenda involving such discussion.
I am very glad that you have brough up this topic for no one yet seems to have talked about it here in Tunza.
Sustainable farming is indeed directly related to animal rights for the current way we consume meat and way we produce the meat according to our needs harm environment and violate dignity of animals.
The way we treat animals are related to how we view environment and so, it is something that should not be disdained when talking about sustainable environment.
This is probably why some of the major vegetaraian movements relate themselves to climate change and envuronmental issues!
Meat free monday is defintiely one of them I think you might have heard about this organization before but if you haven't, check it out. I think you'd be interested in them!

Thanks for the thoughtful article and keep up the green work dear:)

    Hello Jaewon

Accomplishing those goals you suggested in your report are very important. Since all the people in this planet consume foods, it is the responsibility of the whole world to work for sustainable consuming and farming. Along with the technological progress, those goals can be obtained by the little efforts from the normal people, since there are many products coming up with eco-friendly farming process. I hope those goals are accomplished as soon as possible with the efforts of many people.

Thank you for the great report.
