World Fisheries Day is celebrated every year on November 21 to highlight the importance of healthy oceans ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world. Fishing communities celebrate this day through rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural dramas, exhibition, and music shows.
Like every year, we visited a Fish Hatchery from the agriculture and veterinary faculties from Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science. This year, we visited Mandal Fish Hatchery of Rupandehi district. We found many interesting facts on fish. The best thing was that the production of fish has increased tremendously such that 70% of consumers demand are fulfilled on by fish farm themselves. Give years back, these fish had to be imported. The owner of the hatchery was professionally mechanical engineer before but his interest was in fish. So, he received some trainings and started a Fish farming from a small scale. Gradually, he made a significant profit and tried to extend it to the large scale. And now he's successful to supply fish from Birgunj to Kanchanpur district in Nepal. On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, after a visit to mandal hatchery; we made rally to the nearby river called as Tinau with 10,000 fishes with musics, dance and awareness among people and released those fish into the river from Hatchery. The rally was so awaring and was accompanied by musical instrument, song and cultures of peiple; it seems as if world fisheries day was a ritual to the local people and how can it not be like a rituals to them since it was supporting backbone to them in the economy along with it was fulfilling the user demand with very minimum import. They call world fisheries day as a marriage ceremony of fish where fish from Hatchery was taken to the river with musics, dance all the way and was released in the river. The production of fish was of huge significance since it has environment and health benefits as well. Fish plays an important role in fighting hunger and malnutrition. Fish is not only a source of proteins and healthy fats, but also a unique source of essential nutrients, including long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, vitamin D, and calcium. Fish not only has a good food value or decorational value or other value but also have significant environment value. Fish play an important role in nutrient cycles because they store a large proportion of ecosystem nutrients in their tissues, transport nutrients farther than other aquatic animals and excrete nutrients in dissolved forms that are readily available to primary producers. That's why, fish farming has to be promoted taking in consideration of consumers demand as well as ecosystem balance. |

Hello Asmita
It looks like you had a great experience visiting the fishing hatchery. I wish I could visit one of those faculties and get the chance to learn about them lively. I have to agree with you that fish farming plays huge role to the society nowadays, not only in the sense that it provides nutrients and foods to people, but also that otherwise there would be exploitation of the marine environment and cause the break of the balance it marine eco system.
Thank you for sharing you great experience with the report.
Keep up the great work.
