The Rain Season in Zimbabwe 2019/2020 |

It is only in fiction movies when all things happen in a short space of time. It was very hot in Bindura with temperatures over 35ºC and the temperatures were unbeatable. At workplaces, schools and buses people fainted due to high temperatures and dehydration. The media, radios and televisions every time you turn them up it was only about the drought. The death of 100 elephants, cattle and other wild animals. The City fathers were decommissioning water reservoirs because of low water levels on the other hand power shortages due to Lake Kariba the hydroplant low water levels. We were now living the early iron age era with no electricity and water. Imagine without those would an economy grow? It was like a fiction movie, the day began as usual with no clouds but around 2pm the dark clouds began to form over the small town of Bindura. In a short space the clouds released their first rain drops on the dry ground. The rain drops hit the ground and the dusty ground release an aroma that was now a memory. I was coming from school and I had to seek shelter in a shade that was close so that we could not get soaked. In that shade one could easily notice the smiles on everyone's faces and the phrase "finally God remembered us" was behind the smile. The rain have brought a hope for continuity in human existence. Our life depends on the rains, farming as a major economic activity. Imagine the Victoria falls gorge without a flowing Zambezi would it be a tourist attraction our life revolves around the rains. The rain loving insects make their way out of the ground which is food to the birds and other insect eating animals. The bare ground is now beautiful with the new plants growing and the worries for grazing land are reduced. The coming of the rains is a blessing to the people of Zimbabwe. The rains coming should be an alarm to the city fathers, the city councils. The councils should have prepared in the dry season not rather acting after the raining. The drainage system should be efficient helping water flowing easily to the rivers but in Zimbabwe they were reluctant to remove the blockages. After a flash flood occurred and then the city councils want to take action. More so, the roads should have been resurfaced or repaired to fix the potholes in the dry season so as to avoid accidents during the rain season. It is difficult for a motorists to clearly see and know a pothole when the water is flowing over the roads. Poor management in the councils and government will lead to the a threatened human life. The Cyclone Idai victims are not yet housed in permanent and strong structures but there are in tents. The rains have begin and the bridges which were washes away during the heavy rains are not yet built despite of heavy donor funding. Imagine those people in Chimanimani who were affected and they say we have to pray for them, is prayer going to build the infrastructures? Rains should be an alarm to the council to check if their work is at par with the required not a wake up call. We have to balance between having full stomachs and deaths due to rain. We need rain in a protected environment in which it cannot be a threat to people but a smile giver to the people.

Hello Mufaro
Reading you report, I was fascinated by your story that made me agree with your opinions. There is a saying in Korea, 'Mending the barn after the horse is stolen'. This is a mistake that many people continue to make. It can be understood in some sense since people tend to focus on the problems at hand and not care about even the near future, not to say if it is unpredictable. But dealing with environmental issues, some prevention and action beforehand should be taken.

it's Lisa your mentor.
First of all, I am very sorry that not much preparation has been done by the government before raining, that some people were negatively affected by it. I think one of those mistakes that people tend to make over and over is not preparing enough for the climate events that have the potential to harm people. It's always that they act after those events strike people. I hope that before the next raining comes, the government will rehabilitate and prepare the villages!
