Plastic Pollution In India |

Plastic pollution is the accumulation of harmful plastic material in the natural environment threatening the health and safety of humans. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India has released it new statistics which say that India generates 5.6 million tonnes of plastic every year. Noting this new info, the Supreme Court has commented that "India is sitting on a Plastic Time Bomb". The new report by the CPCB has created a lot of sensation in the media and public.
Approximately only 60% of this plastic waste is recycled while the other 40% is disposed off into oceans which causes pollution of water bodies and death of aquatic ecosystems. Plastics contain harmful toxins which can cause skin diseases such as dermatitis and eye sores upon physical contact. They can even kill animals if the animals consume these plastics unknowingly. Plastics can release a few chemicals into the soil which cause land infertility and in turn have adverse effects on the soil and agricultural productivity. According to the United Nations Environmental Protection Agency (UNEPA) 12% of the solid municipal wastes consists of plastics. According to two Supreme Court Judges of India, plastics are a bigger threat to future generations of India than nuclear weapons. Water bottles, plastic carry bags and cigarette boxes are the main sources of plastic waste in India. As a measure of safety, all plastic bags which have a mass of less than 40 microns have been banned. All corporate companies have been advised to use alternative forms of packaging such as paper rather than using plastic. Someday, i hope that these plastics are replaced by eco-friendly material.

Thank you Ramal for sharing the seriousness of plastic pollution in India.
We all are somehow addicted to the convenience of plastic.
We should change our habit of choosing plastic due to its convenience.
