My Visit to Solid Waste Landfill Site - Sisdole, Nuwakot

Solid waste are the waste arising from the human and animal activities that are normally solid and that are discarded as useless or unwanted (Cunningham and Cunningham 2004). Solid waste varies for developed countries and developing countries, urban area and rural areas due to living standard, livelihood practices and consumption pattern. Kathmandu Valley, densely populated area with population 4 million, generates a huge amount of solid waste. Data depicts its total solid waste accumulation of about 405 tons per day, heaps of organic (70 per cent), plastic (9 per cent), paper (8 per cent), inert materials (4 per cent), and rubber and metals threatening sanitation and health. (NGO FORUM).

Kathmandu metropolitan city operates the small vehicles within the city  to gather the waster for the different community and areas to the Teku transfer station in Teku, Kathmandu. Here the waster are primarily segregated and transport to landfill site in Sisdol. Sisdol landfill site which is about 2 ha for landfilling in Okharpauwa-4, Nuwakot. It is 25 Km far from the Kathmandu valley. The land fill was developed as semi aerobic condition (JICA/GON 2006). Gaussian model was used assuming vent pipes to landfill as point source.

We students of SchEMS visited the Sisdole landfill side as the academic visit to study the solid waste management technique. Here, We talked with Mr. Satkar Shrestha an authorized personal on duty at the landfill site from KMC. We learned and observed the waste collection method, its segregation at teku and final disposal to the Sisdole. At Sisdole the waster pickers again segregate the recyclable materials like, Beer bottle, broken glasses, Plastics, paper, cotton cloths, iron etc.

The waste is pilled one over another per day. The leached from the pilled waste wall are collected in the leached pond downstream. The leached  are again pumped up as the return sludge for the new waste compiled. The chemicals like Centranol,  Luvand, Phenyl,  Jibato ( Nepali Organic Smell Controller) are used to control the foul smell at landfill site. The air is very unpleasant in this area. Due to this situation sometime conflict arises between the management and the local communities regarding the poor health, water source pollution due to leached leakage to river, communicative diseases and many more said Mr. Satkar.

Thus these were my observation and learning from the visit to landfill site of Sisdole, Nuwakot.
