Ramsar is the first of the modern global intergovernmental treaties on conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, which is dedicated to an ecosystem, with relatively simple and general provisions.
The initial emphasis of the Convention was the conservation and wise use of wetlands primarily as habitat for waterfowl, however, over the years the Convention has broadened its scope to include the conservation and wise use of wetlands in its aspects, recognizing wetlands are extremely important for biodiversity conservation and welfare of human communities.
Mexico is part of the Ramsar Convention since 1986, is currently the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, (CONANP) the Federal Government commissioned Unit, to carry out the implementation of the Convention. Our country (Mexico) has 138 Ramsar sites with a total area of nearly nine million hectares. Including, among other types of wetlands, mangroves, sea grasses, high mountain wetlands, coral reefs, oasis, karst and endangered species sites.
In Mexico, the lack of ecological criteria in the design and implementation of public policy in the twentieth century led to severe damage to the environment: deforestation and erosion caused siltation and decreased the flow of many rivers and springs drying more than 70 percent of the major watersheds are polluted by excessive and inappropriate use of agrochemicals and industrial and municipal discharges pollution from industrial organic discharges equivalent to 100 million untreated sewage are the main cause of water-related diseases more than a quarter of aquifers are overexploited or at high risk of getting this condition biodiversity of aquatic systems is threatened by unsustainable fishing practices, invasive species and the diversion of river channels, among other damages.
Most problems related to wetland management are complex and cut across political and administrative boundaries. Therefore, it is necessary for management to involve the scientific and actors at local, national, regional and international levels as appropriate experience.
Given this, it is necessary that the action for the conservation of wetlands is made from the conceptual framework of ecosystem management, which involves recognizing the integration between nature and culture, humans being an integral part ecosystem. In this context, an ecosystem approach involves defining multiple targets for the geographical areas in which functions are possible environmental and social values of wetlands.
Wetlands and the ecosystem services they provide are extremely valuable to the world population. It is necessary to protect these important wetlands request the government of Mexico to decree these areas as protected natural areas, abolish the "sport" hunting in these areas and take action to the sanitation processes and remediation of this wetlands
I see these birds in the great migration processes that have these wonderful animals, but for some, just to see something to shoot and kill, sport hunting should be prohibited because this activity is offensive by the animals and the biodiversity.
