With the current climate status, predicting the weather is much harder than ever. In Cebu alone, unexpected heavy rains were experienced throughout this week when it is supposed to be a time for drought (El Nino). The heavy rain caused massive flooding in all areas of Cebu City, Mandaue City and Talisay City with water at knee-level and even neck-level.
The flooding caused traffic congestion and left commuters stranded on the road, erosion and landslides that ruined properties, houses swept away by strong water's current, and killed a sixteen year old boy while he was swimming in a river.
Meanwhile, the government council are so busy throwing stones at each other because of the poorly designed drainage system. True, the drainage system is a critical tool to alleviate this crisis and it should be given attention but they have to understand that flooding is not just an outcome of poor drainage system. There is an underlying cause of this problem, and that is the negligence and apathy of the people in protecting and preserving trees and the environment as a whole.
Too many trees are being felled and natural eco-system destroyed to build infrastures too many reclamations were done in hope to widen the land area of the region too many rivers are clogged with garbage and are transformed into dump sites yet too many people choose to do nothing and see nothing of these growing problems.
You see, unless everyone perceives the bigger picture of the situation and understand the real root cause of the problem, the same scenario will be seen over and over again until everyone is flushed away by our own waste and negligence.

Ah!! I guess that was really very heavy compared to the previous rains? Right?
There are so many human causes of floods such as Deforestation, poor farming, overgrazing, poor water management, population pressure and climate change itself.
Climate change has contributed to a rise in extreme weather events - including higher-intensity hurricanes and heavier rainfalls across the world.

That's true Lesedi. We have the sentiments and I'm glad you pointed out a really important idea. Like what you said "Caring for the environment is not a short term project but a lifetime project that every individual must take part in".
e should continue to do our part in creating environmental awareness in our region.

In India, Jammu & Kashmir are experiencing heavy floods too. The loss of lives, in properties and infrastructure is too high. I will highlight it very soon in my next article.

Nice one Mary!
I just hope other people could see the bigger picture like we do. Caring for the environment is not a short term project but a lifetime project that every individual must take part in.
Our fore-fathers did not predict most of the environmental problems we are having today. We can blame this on lack of advanced research methods, poor technologies or plain ignorance. In the same way, we will harness the benefits of our environmental deeds maybe after 50 years or probably after we have departed from this earth.
The question is are you short sighted or long sighted? Do you see the bigger picture or not?

Hi Udeh! Thanks for the feedback. Yes, "El Nino" is often referred to as time of drought in Cebu since we actually do not experience rain for a long time and the temperature would range from 30 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees Celsius.

Thank you friends for your feedback. It's true, I already read news article about other places around the globe experiencing heavy rains, floods and other unusual weather conditions. It's just a sad fact that the 'ratio' of people who care about the environment is much much smaller that those who people who are apathetic. But still, I'm not losing that with our small actions, we can create ripples to other people and somehow influence them to take action. :)

Agreed, Mary. Unless the real root cause of the problem is not addressed we face the same situation again & blame game again.
Drainage is a vital link of this issue. Robust Drainage is the key to mitigate such flooding.
WE have caused this problem & WE have to curb this.
Save trees, bring afforestation Do not pollute the rivers, dispose wisely & save the mankind!

Thanks for sharing , Mary. Floods are causing havoc on human lives and property everywhere. I agree with you that this is the result of humans messing with nature. Human beings increase the risk of flooding by littering, causing pollution, and by certain farming activities. Cutting down trees that protect riverbanks also lead to flooding. We must understand our responsibility towards our environment and stop acting selfish.

we need to stop any further hapazard developmental activities and promote sustainable development. As you said, "With the current climate status, predicting the weather is much harder than ever". WE now experience change in rainfall pattern as well here in nepal and has caused flood and lanslide in some part of our countries due to sudden rainfall.

Great report!
It's so sad that someone, a teenager, lost his life.May God rest his soul.
Now,such situations are also obtainable in Nigeria with the climate becoming increasingly unpredictable and ours is the inexcusable task of tackling climate change from the very root of the problem. No matter how small the effort,we have to do it as this planet is our shared responsibility.
Just keep on raising awareness on the situation and hopefully, it will be remedied.
On a lighter note, does "El Nino" mean drought in Cebu?,I would love to know.

Such phenomena, unfortunately, are not rare in other places of the world too nowadays. We should stop the climate change holistically, not by building dams, but by facing the problem in its root and stop the climate change.
