Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 It's amazing to think that most people's life have got impacted by their believes. I, myself, am not a big believer but sometimes, when I'm hoping for something good, I'll cross my fingers. Sometimes, it works (perhaps a coincident: D), more often that that, it doesn't. Most of believes are quite intangible. Starting off by talking about believes, some of you may not see the connection of the topic to environmental preservation yet. This article is about the Tree Ordination.
In Thailand, people pay respect to monks. Thai people have believed in the importance of monks for a long time. Phra Khru (a priest whose original duty was to teach) Manus Nateepitak, Buddhist monks in Payao, northern part of Thailand, noticed this point and tried to exploit it in a good way. He thinks that it would be great if people pay more respect to the trees too. So, he has created a new ceremony called, ?Trees' ordination?. This project was launched on the main purpose to stop people from cutting trees illegally. The ceremony is performed like people perform when they ordain monks. People will pray for the god of forest to witness the holy ceremony that the trees are being ordained. After the praying, people will build a shrine so that people in the area can come and pay respect to the trees. The trees that were ordained will have yellow monks' robes around them. The robes are the sign to warn people passing by that these trees are like monks, and they must not hurt the monks. The trees will be safe and the villagers will surely stick together to protect the ordained trees from the people who steal them illegally. The yellow robes and the ceremony like praying to the god of forest are the factors to make it more obvious and common for people to understand that a tree is like a person.
According to human's perception, we won't hurt each other. Phra Khru Manus Nateepitak has done a really good job in campaigning new attitude and creating harmony in people that will stand up for the trees. The result is that people totally buy this idea and less trees are being harmed. At this rate, we maybe able to retrieve the green parts of the world back before they're all gone.
Giving the idea of saving energy through the common believe to get access to local people is the simple ways to save environment. In my opinion, the trees are the givers. They deserve honor and respect the same as normal people, the same as monk. We wouldn't be living happily if there are no trees. Imagine the world without tree. We will have no source of food and eventually die form starvation. Trees purify the air for us. Trees give lives. Trees give shelter. Trees give food. Trees had done so many things to us and some people are cutting them down without concerning about them. This ceremony is for people to start paying respect to the trees. In the future, I hope that people will understand that they shouldn't mistreat the trees even there's no robe on the trunk.

Thanks for sharing about Trees ordination ceremony. Indeed,It's fantastic idea. All cultures have different ways of showing their respect and gratitude towards mother earth.
For example, In Uttarakhand(Indian State) we have a festival called "Harela"which means "the green day". on that day, we sow seeds and it is believed that every seed sown that day survives.

Swasamon, our ancestors followed many eco-friendly rituals. So long it is helping the environment, in my opinion "Tree ordination" is acceptable.
To the contrary tree cutting must be punishable with heavy fines & compulsory planting of 10 new saplings by the offender.

We only had belief for trees but never practiced "Tree ordination" ceremony as mentioned by Swasamon. This really creates positive attitude among the illiterate people so that they too can discourage illegal marketing of trees. And of course we should make all the people recognize the value of trees even without robe on the trunk. I heartily appreciate the work of Phra Khru Manus Nateepitak. Thank you Swasamon Jaidee!!

Swasamon, I fully agree that Most of believes are quite intangible. Still if there is no harm in a belief, you can rely on that.
Tree ordination is an Eco-friendly ritual & is therefore justified.
Thanks for your report.

thank you for the post Swasamon. We need to foster such eco-culture through religion as well especiallyin those areas where religion defines the way of lfe.
here in Nepal, we have high respect for trees like peepal(Ficus religiosa) and bar(Ficus benghlensis) and sami(Ficus benjamina), Neem(Azadirach indica) and also for Basil/Tulasi (Ocimum tenuiflorum). We worship them as god and people are scared to cut such trees. So more we plant such trees, more benefits we get.

Thanks for sharing detail about this interesting ceremony "Tree ordination". Worshipping trees and giving them same respect as monks is justified because of unlimited advantages of trees , because of the fact that trees are our lifelines . We all must respect , preserve and protect trees. Cutting trees should be severely punishable throughout the world. Thanks again for interesting details.
