Walk for Climate Justice

by Bam Azores | 28-09-2014 11:25 recommendations 0

The person in the first photo is Climate Change Commissioner Naderev Sano of the Philippines. He is well known in the Climate Change scene all over the world.  I first met him at a Greeneration Summit in 2012 when he spoke and I was inspired by his message.

Last year in Poland, Naderev Sano made people cry at the 9th COP on Climate Change in Warsaw when he declared that he would fast (not eat) "until a meaningful outcome is in sight" and "until we see real ambition on climate action in accordance with the principles of the convention."  He asked the delegates at the 9th COP to make their pledges to the UN's Green Climate Fund, which aims to help countries to reduce their climate change emissions and help mitigate the effects of climate change. He made this appeal during a time for the Philippines when large areas were devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan.  Mr. Sano was personally feeling it because his brother (AG Sano) was in Tacloban, Leyte at that time helping pull out bodies of the dead victims of the typhoon.

This year, Naderev Sano will lead the WALK FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE.  This is in solidarity with the call for climate justice all over the world. On September 23 while world leaders were meeting to address the issues of climate change in the UN Climate Summit, thousands of people gathered in more than 2700 events in 150 countries to demand action from their leaders.

In the Philippines, the climate advocates will join the call with the Walk for Climate Justice that will start on October 2, 2014 from Kilometer Zero in Rizal Park, Manila where the monument to our National Hero Jose Rizal is located.   The Walk will end after forty days (on November 8) in Tacloban City. This is the anniversary of the time Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines last year with worst damage in Tacloban.

The WALK FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE hopes to commemorate the Super Typhoon Haiyan and to bring awareness to the impacts of climate change.  The forty day walk on foot from Manila will cover about 800 kilometers. Many climate advocates will join the walk. One of them will be AG Sano, Naderev?s brother who will visit the place where he experienced the onslaught of Super Typhoon Haiyan one year ago.

Actually the Catholic Church Cardinal and other priests was scheduled to launch the Walk for Climate Justice by doing a version of it and visiting several churches on foot starting from the Manila Cathedral to Baclaran Church in Pasay City. But they had to cancel because Typhoon Mario hit the Philippines again in a big way and there was major flooding all over the Metro Manila area.

I'm glad to know that Pinoys did not easily forget the cause of Typhoon Haiyan. It's very important that our fellowmen be more serious in the battle against climate change considering that we are part of the "the ring of fire regions".

Thank you for sharing this, Bam. I'm excited to hear more about your reports.

Climate change is a key issue for the Philippines, which is the third most disaster-prone country in the world. So it's really really needed that all residents there understand the impact of climate change and start to work towards protecting environment , reducing individual carbon footprint .
Glad to know about "Walk for Climate Justice" to commemorate Super Typhoon Haiyan which battered the Philippines in November 2013 and killed more than 6,000 people. This walk would be a great way to spread awareness about impacts of climate change. All the best for such long walk (40days/800km) .

It's good to stand for what we believe in. It's even easier when we share articles with each other to spread the view of green world :)
