Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Every year, many young boys would become ordained as monks for a short period of time. As Thais? belief that every man should get ordained once in his life to substitute his parents? merit. The Talipot fan will be made and give to newly monk to used as monks? equipments. (Talipot fan came from Pali language. It means the palm tree. Palm leaves were used by Thai people as fan in the past.) Talipot fan is a big fan attached on long pole imitating the look of palm leaves, to hold when praying. After some monks leave the Buddhist monkhood, monks usually don?t reuse or hand the used Talipot fan to other monks ordained after because the monks will get their name written on their Talipot fan.
The Talipot fan will be left for the temples. Some of them were kept but a lot of them are burned to get rid of. While burning, toxic gas and greenhouse gas emerges into the atmosphere, ruining the ozone layers and destroying people?s lungs. So, if we get rid of this process, we can help to save environment. Also, the Talipot fan will not become useless waste once used.
To solve problem of wastes and pollution, a monk named Phra Prasong Paripunnoo has created a project called ?Dhamma Klub Talipot?. The project has both direct and indirect meaning. Directly translated, it means to reverse Talipot fan into new used as a story telling media. Phra Prasong gathered volunteered people to complete the mission by painting the Talipot fans with colorful pictures from different stories. The stories have Buddha's teaching in it. So, the painted Talipot fans are brought in use again when telling stories to people. By indirect meaning, Phra Prasong would like to show people that Buddhist doctrine is not boring .
I'm glad that the old Talipot fan are being used in different way rather than being burned. And it helps to reduce the waste created by people. So, I joined this activity of storytelling to the children, using painted Talipot fan as a tool and the children enjoyed listening to the Dhamma-teaching stories without pouting or getting bored.
The idea has also led me to the new thinking. If monk equipment can be transformed as Buddha's teaching media, then all the reusable waste can be turned into the campaign of environmental-preservation media as well to remind us how we can help to save the earth in easy way. The recycling technique gives another benefit in return. We can adapt the method to plain household things like water bottles. We can recycle and transform it into new look and serve different purpose instead of burning it.

Beautiful report Jaidee!
I am so happy to learn of this initiative and I am sure some other religious or cultural practices that are not environment-friendly will have alternatives just like this one.
Thanks for sharing!

By using a small example of 'Talipot fan', you have taken recycling to next level. These painted fans looks awesome in pics & children will remember to recycle their own fans when their turn comes later in the life.
They will take care to recycle paper, plastic & other household items as well.
Well reported Swasamon, thanks for the report.

Nice example of recycling. Thanks for sharing , Swasamon. Like that , almost everything on this earth has some value . Waste is not a waste till it is wasted. We must try as much as possible to reduce the wastage by reusing or recycling the things once they have served their original purpose.

Great report Swasamon. It is often very difficult to defy some cultural and religious beliefs in order to try and conserve the environment. Its good to see that Phra Prasong Paripunnoo seem to be making progress in reversing such conventions. Good luck.
Wish I could see a picture of this Talipot fan.
