GREEN HOPE UAE holds "LIMA IN DUBAI" CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE

by | 30-09-2014 18:00 recommendations 0

The United Nations Conference on Climate Change ( UNFCCC )  also known as COP is being held this year in Lima , Peru.

Climate change and its adverse effects are now at the forefront of the global environmental agenda. Global warming caused primarily by the emissions of Green House Gases ( GHGs) are melting ice caps, destabilizing weather patterns, raising sea levels , causing forest fires and, as a cumulative effect, creating a situation wherein we stand at risk of destabilizing the fine balance of life, on our planet. The COP20 summit to be held in Lima will once again seek to negotiate and cap the level of GHG emissions of the various nations, primarily of the economic powerhouses, whose factories belch out millions of tonnes of GHGs into the atmosphere every day.

Civil society is at the receiving end of the global warming syndrome and it is imperative for them to influence the negotiations positively. The youth constituency, who are termed as the Future Generations, are at greatest risk of inheriting a "hotter" planet with limited natural resources due to the continuing climate change scenario. Thus it is very important for the children and youth to be an active part of the dialogue process on mitigating climate change. This is the background behind the  global movement called "COP in MyCity" designed by a French organisation CliMates. They partner with youth organisations from different cities across the world to organize its own mobilization in order to bridge the gap between the city and the climate change conference in Lima.

Green Hope UAE was chosen by CliMates to be their partner for this "COP in MyCity" in Dubai titled "Lima in Dubai". The awareness and capacity building conference was held on 30th August at "The Cribb" in Al Quoz Dubai. The event was full to capacity with 60 students from 11 schools in Dubai and Sharjah attending it. It was a 5 hour event, beginning at 8.30am in the morning .

Youth members of Green Hope UAE spread awareness about climate change, its impacts and how we, as youth, should rise to the occasion and work towards mitigating its effects. The conference had interactive group workshops with each group presenting their ideas on mitigating climate change. To raise awareness a "Climate Quiz" was also conducted.  A flash mob contributed to liven things up during the course of the conference.

Green Hope UAE uses various mediums of communication during its workshops and during this summit especially composed a song on "Climate Change" and through its rendition sought to spread awareness on its impact on the planet.

While concluding the session, all the participants wrote their pledges on the walls of the venue.

Green Hope UAE would like to especially acknowledge the support of "The Cribb" which hosted the event.
