My say,Climate change and its impact in Nepal

Around the globe, seasons are shifting, temperatures are climbing and sea levels are rising. These days the environment is grappled with the  various destruction and degradation  caused by the so  called conscious  human. Unquestionably, the earth is facing its most serious challenge, as  a species in the web of life, man is rapidly destroying the foundation of his/her very existence. Though we are so much sophisticated by the luxuries we get from this materialistic world, yet we bound to return to the nature when calls. Nature is the place where  we open our eyes, play  our part, eat, spend our life times and where finally our body will be turned into ashes. We are living in this materialistic world neglecting the circumstances we have to bear where our so called developmental progress will involuntarily crush our eternal happiness. sometimes it make great humor when we listen that conventions and seminars for biodiversity conservation and environment protection are signing in the same country where nuclear weapons are frequently tested. In my point of view it doesn?t make a sense.Meanwhile, our planet must still supply us  and all living things  with air, water, food and safe places to live. If we don't act now, climate change will rapidly alter the lands and waters we all depend upon for survival, leaving our children and grandchildren with a very different world.

Besides Nepal is small country yet enriched with different species of wild flora and fauna, it is the hub with various rare animals and plants . According to the recent data, Nepal has got 118 type of ecosystem besides ocean and desert,75 type of vegetation and 35 type of forest,43 species of amphibian,181 species of mammals,100 reptiles,635 species of butterfly,185 species of fresh water fish including different type of flora and fauna only residing in Nepal. According to BCN(Bird Conservation Nepal) among 876 species of birds  are found in Nepal  among them 31 species have been disappearing from the world. As Nepal  is the small country which is the victim of all the changes caused by  the climate change, global warming, acid rain etc as a result of emission of GHG gases by the developed country. Forest pollution is the another factor responsible for the destruction of wild flora and fauna. It is the challenging task for the conservationist indeed. Toxic chemical from the industries and their disposal into the river, use of chemical pesticides and fertilizer in the agricultural field, air pollution, overpopulation, deforestation, encroachment  are the sole cause for the deterioration of the natural environment.

Changing rainfall pattern, decline in average crop yield, rising temperature, longer hot season, more occurance of the insect like mosquito, flies and various other bacteria etc, various flashfloods in different region of the country are the changes we are observing since few years.Glancing back to the time few years back, the fresh air had changed, its color had changed, those trees with many chirping bird around had changed, cold melancholy from the river had changed, those wavy river with water had no more existence ,those monkey roaming around my farmland waiting for the chance to attack crops are no more there .Those silent street with few people are now with thousands of people with which i can't greet. Isn't  it  beyond range?

However, the current changes in climate cannot be considered as ordinary. Because of its scale and rapidity, this warming of our climate can only be described as extraordinary in the history of our planet.Response to climate change in Nepal has been growing in recent years with an effort to cope with the changing situation and build resilience capacity into adaptation to climate change. It only mentioned the provision of the implementation mechanism at district or village development committee level to act climate change adaptation. However, this document is still silent to provision of implementation mechanism at community level. Though there are still silent to act adaptation implementation mechanism at community level, some community level adaptive strategies are being implemented as community based adaptation plan for poor & vulnerable communities and who have less capacity to cope with disaster and are more dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods.

A small effort can make a large difference, so the change should be started from the grass root level. As rural people are uneducated, they have unequal access to the  opportunity, their voice is muted in the decision making. Community awareness can be the best solution along with the strong enforcement of rules and laws, clear demarcation of the forest boundary etc. In this context different agreements and goals have been set globally to reduce the GHG emission, deforestation, pollution  etc  to longer the life of the planet. Indeed many hands and natural forces have shaped the earth around us, being a youth who always love environments, wildlife and other components, it is our duty to raise key issues in relation to the climate change mitigation and adaptation. Global climate change related initiatives aimed at reducing pollution, deforestation and forest degradation, including role of conservation, sustainable management of forest.

Thank you Bhawana for the article.
Its truly amazing to see so many species of animals and plants in very small country like ours. But thanks to climate change, there has been decrease in number of species. this is such a sad news.

    My own experience this year:
This year, we had the start of monsoon very late. There should have been sunny day and cool weather right now. But there's scorching sun, warming up the environment and suddenly there's heavy rainfall leaving too cold weather. Such situations were never seen previously here in Nepal. Like Swasamon said, here in Nepal we experience heavy morning rainfall making environment cool and then scorching sun heating everything up.

Its too scary to imagine the effect of climate change. Like Saroj has said, we have started from our side and participating/conducting programs. Every eco-generation member, being a part of responsible citizen should act promptly to make our environment better.

Agreed Bhawana, the change / education must start at grass root level. Apart from Nepal all other countries are facing this phenomenon.
We must thank Tunza Eco-Gen for the unique platform provided to spread tremendous awareness to mitigate climate change.
As our efforts are constant the positive results are for sure to be achieved.
Nepali ambassadors are doing an excellent job. Keep it up!!

Climate change is playing havoc everywhere . Animals are losing their habitats. Species are getting extinct , loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more intense heat waves. You are right , Bhawana that current changes can not be ignored . It's high time that all the stakeholders(we individuals , corporates , governments...) wake up and start acting responsibly towards reducing carbon footprint and mitigating climate change .

Yup, we should start now & from the grass-root level. We can contribute from my side, a small effort could also make the vast difference. I think this is the theme to be adopted by ourselves. So, I have started from my side & we all should start from our side because the universal theme is " Think Globally, Act locally". N thanks for the information bhawana.

Thailand got impacted too! We have 3 seasons here, summer, winter, and rainy season. But, now, it turns out too be 3 seasons, hot, very hot, and very very hot. It's true. Sometimes, there's 3 seasons crammed in one day! I'd wake up with the rainstorm and then, shinning sun throughout the afternoon, then end the day with cold wind and slight but of rain. I think the effects will get more dramatic if we don't put our care into environmental issues. It may not be just hot or cold weathers, but also environmental disasters. I agree with you that small effort can make large difference. Fight on, ecologist! Thanks for sharing, Bhawana :)
