Smelly Cows

by Dharmendra Kapri | 10-10-2014 01:25 recommendations 0

When we talk about looking after our world we usually think about recycling, not using our cars too much and switching off lights. But did you know that a lot of pollution is caused when cows and other farm animals ?break wind??! (In other words when they burp and fart!) This is because they release a very damaging gas called methane . This gas is 23 times worse than carbon dioxide so many people think we should eat less meat to help prevent further climate change.

Did You Know?
Farm animals breaking wind causes more pollution than all the cars, trucks, planes, trains and buses put together!

Huge amounts of land are needed for herds of cows to graze on. In South America, particularly Brazil, vast areas of  rainforest are chopped down to do just that. Many of these cows are turned into beefburgers for people to eat in North America.

You need a lot of food to feed an animal up and turn it into meat. Not only does that use land but also lots of water to look after the animal and grow its food. To get 1 kg of beef you need 15 times more water than you?d need to grow 1 kg wheat. To get 1 beefburger 2,400 litres of water will have been used.

To grow farm animals? food a lot of artificial fertilizers and pesticides are used which are bad for the environment unless the meat is ?organic?

This Sunday I'm planning to go to a local butcher and will try to find out from which farms they get their meat , how the animals are kept and what they are fed.

Have a ?meat free day? at least once a week. What could you eat instead?

Farm animals are source of pollution as you rightly brought to our attention the lesser known fact about their "windbreaking" stuff. Also it consumes lots of resources to produce meat. So Is turning vegetarian the perfect solution? I don't think so . If all of us become vegetarians then there would be too much load on trees and plants and may not be sustainable , will disturb whole of the ECOSYSTEM and will create global warming.
We need to understand the causes of global warming and address them, eating veg is not a solution, in fact if everybody starts eating only veg then there will be less vegetation left, second thing is animal population will increase this in turn reduces vegetation on earth. Less green earth means more global warming. SO veg and non veg eaters should be in optimum proportion .Meat free day is a good proposal.
    Thanks for the report.

I am not against meat lovers, but my humble point of view is that human body, by default, is not meant to be meat eating. Our Teeth & intestines are an example.
    Thanks for the report, Dharmendra

Dharmendra, we are a vegan family.
I agree that rearing animals just for butchery is cruel.

I AM SURE this is really bad news to meat lovers out there who i also seem to be friends with. I think we need to give a break to these poor animals and start going vegeterean i don't think it's impossible especially that we have alternatives such as beans, soya and other protein rich foods. That's very good presentation there ofcourse Mr Dharmendra Kapri. It really reminds me of one of my presentations I had in my school just a year ago pertaining to this very topic...thumbs up seems we are sailing in unison.

You have nicely written the article. Going veggie is really eco friendly behaviour.
Producing meat consumes lot of energy and go through long food chain so it's way better to focus in production of plant product.
