After 80 weeks of rigorous cleaning campaign and program, now the Bagmati River has gone under transformational visual change. With mass participation of general public, security personnel and employees of government and private organizations, Bagmati has now got its new introduction. Now we are able to see the Bagmati flowing freely which was a rare sight in the past due to the deposition of solid waste and improper drainage deposition.

The dedication of everyone involved in the Clean Bagmati Campaign, those who volunteered to dirty their hands once every Saturday to clean their local river system, has paid off well. The Bagmati today is free from pollutants the water that flows in the river is much cleaner, so much so that one could bathe in the river section of Pashupatinath Temple area, one of the great religious place of Hindu. The water that flows through the temple is safe for taking bath, which has been proven scientifically.

Along with the private institutions governmental officers from different capacities including the President, was involved in this campaign. Over 900 metric tons of wastes have been now removed from the removed. The government of Nepal spends around 250$ every week in order to buy masks, gloves for the cleaners and till now it has already spent around eleven thousand dollars.

Now the rate of depositing waste has been reduced to a greater extent, after vigorous awareness program, cleaning program and fine imposed by the government. The government has been utilizing the money collected from the fine in cleaning campaign of the river.

Private institutions which lie near to the river are accepting their role and cleaning their part, where they themselves manage financial and human resources. Even school and colleges are taking the initiation and cleaning up the river with great vigor and enthusiasm.

Apart from cleaning the government side has been constructing physical infrastructure like sewerage, road and retaining walls. It has installed improvised drainage system with proper drainage deposition. The retaining wall has been made in order to make the flow of water smoother, so that the river remains clean. The work has been completed in many parts of Kathmandu. The remaining works are expected to complete in next two years.

With the collective efforts of the people from different walks of life, Bagmati has got its new life and its life ahead completely depends upon us. So a collective effort should be continued in the days ahead to come for cleaner Bagmati.

    WoW amazing news, Sabin.
Removing 900MT of waste from Bagmati river in 80 weeks is a daunting task. We are glad to know that the river is cleaner now & scientifically proven safe for bathing in area near holy Pashupatinath Temple.
Imposing fines for non-compliance by the govt. & active participation of institutions & public are excellent initiatives.
We hope that in 2 years' time the whole project succeeds like this part has.
    Thanks for the encouraging report.
