Economic, environmental and social costs of food loss and waste |
---|
World Food Day is observed every year to raise awareness of food security and strengthening solidarity in the struggle against hunger. When you save the food, you save the resources used to produce it. Reducing waste by not creating it in the first place should be a priority for all. This day is declared by the UN General Assembly that aims to heighten public awareness of world food problems and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. If nature asked us to pay the total bill for food waste, it could charge society at least 700 billion dollars a year. Reducing food waste makes sense economically, environmentally and socially as it causes: ¡¤ Water for irrigation and increased water scarcity. ¡¤ Loss of wetlands that purify water and eventually on the biodiversity of pastures. ¡¤ Value of fish discarded. ¡¤ Scarcity of essential agricultural inputs such as phosphorus and increase in food prices because of less supply. ¡¤ Cleared forests and eroded land. ¡¤ Loss of pollinators, fishes and other biodiversity. What can be done? 1. Food that is about to be wasted can be timely redirected to the charities. 2. If it is not good for human consumption then feed it to livestock so that there is less need to produce animal feed. 3. Raising consumer awareness is of the topmost priority. Food wastage is really deplorable. We make sure never to waste food at home or while eating out.
Waste food, if any, can be composted, through Bokashi Bins also.

yes quantity is not a matter less, quality and nutritious food is important. Eating salads is advisable than cooked one. In my family we follow the eco friendly Sundays from my age of four. On that day morning we three my mom, father and me are taking fruits and vegetables and bits of coconut. Afternoon semisolid which consume less fuel. But both are very nutritious.

True Christy.I also believe in the same concept of eating.we should change our attitude towards food for the sake of our environment. We have to eat to live so that we can function optimally both physically and mentally.
We should think twice that How much energy is used to produce that meal? How much more satisfied we would feel if we think not only for ourselves.Everyone should experience this themselves.

Thank you for well organized list Mohit :) I think, thoughtful eating should be the norm for everyone in the world. It's also great way for improving diet. If you really appreciate what you eat, then you will start eating less and eating healthier. Of course it's advantageous for the environment too. So, I would like to recommend thoughtful eating for everyone.

You have nicely highlighted issues of food waste.
Food unfit for human consumption might be good source of food for live stocks . That one of the great ways to aptly use 'about to be wasted' food.
Also 700 billion dollar, whoa it's too much amount.
Let's act wisely.
Thanks for the post Mohit

Thanks for highlighting the issue of Food wastage. Watched the video , it's good , thanks for sharing. In addition to your given tips of "what can be done" , I would like to add that we should NOT overpurchase from grocery store just because these are on offer, we should NOT over cook and we should NOT over order at restaurant.
