HORN FREE DAY IN LAGOS

by | 26-10-2014 13:30 recommendations 0

Lagos state is the commercial hub center of Nigeria. It is located in the South Western region of the country and has an estimated population of 21million persons.
Lagos is known for it's unchanging huge traffic and the consequent alarming noise.

Owing to the huge vehicular traffic in Lagos, the state is indeed a noisy one. Noise which majorly emanates from the car horns. It has become unbearable to say the least and in the light of that, the Lagos state government in September 2014 declared October 15 as a "Horn Free" day in Lagos to help reduce noise pollution in the state. The day was meant to be one in which drivers will reduce to the most possible minimum, their use of horns.
The governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola, during his speech before the day made it clear that their action was the wish of Lagos residents who have repeatedly sent messages bemoaning the heavy noise pollution in the state.
He said, it is "a response to the petitions and complaints of citizens and tax payers who, on daily basis, write and petition us that somebody is preventing them from sleep either from the noise they are making or from other uncharitable activities they are carrying on without regard for the well-being of their neighbours?.

The annoying part of it is that more often than not, those honking their horns have no need to do so. They just honk their horn for the sake of it and this have serious health implications.

The governor cited examples with Europe where he said you can walk for 10 days on their road without hearing any horn.

The Lagos horn-free day which happened on the 15th of October was voluntary and promising.
It will be an annual event and with massive awareness and education, the programme in the long run will prove a huge success.
At least, Lagosians now known that some hours without horn doesn't hurt.
I was very impressed by this initiative as it will help reduce noise pollution in Lagos and improve the health of the Lagos residents.

@Rijal and @Arushi: Yes the traffic is terrible that's one of the characteristics of Lagos state.
If that could be worked on,the state will be one of the best cities to live in the world.

A really nice initiative that could be introduced in other countries too! Honking does not have much to offer as the traffic is concerned. This day makes people think twice before honking the next time, understanding how much better it is without it.

I never like the sound of honking. I think it's quite rude to beep honk at other drivers. Traffic in Thailand is terrible too. I wish everyday would be the honk free day. I think it's like eliminating the noise pollution from the street. Thanks for sharing!

It is a good start, Udeh.
Citizens will feel committed towards more environmental issues if such small initiatives are successful.
    Honking is a real irritant.

Thank you Udeh! Hmm what do you personally feel about its effectiveness as a citizen of Nigeria? Did the sound noise significantly decreased during the no honking period?

Thank you Udeh for sharing the article and Congrats Nigeria for the celebration.
Horn is major sound pollutant it should be strictly restricted in hospital, residential and school areas. Hope this day becomes annual event and other developing countries as well follow the path,

Such a horrible traffic , chaotic! Over that honking , must be crazy being there on roads. Here in UAE as well, honking is not allowed and it is so peaceful being on roads. Authorities should first manage the traffic and then make honking illegal. Horn free day is a good start , thanks for sharing , Udeh.
