UNSUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF FOREST AND FOREST RESOURCES IN CAMEROON AND ITS IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT

by | 29-10-2014 22:45 recommendations 0

Despite the  laws governing the exploitation of forest resources and the great work of  advocates in Cameroon, illigal poaching, logging and exploitation of non timber resources has been the  order of the due to corruption .                             Lacking an effective forest conservation program and suffering from endemic and pervasive corruption—it annually ranks near the top of the list for the world's most corrupt countries—Cameroon has found logging highly damaging to the rainforest environment. According to published reports, foreign loggers—the vast majority of logging companies operating in Cameroon are foreign-owned—have aggressively and unsustainably logged their concessions without much concern over prosecution by corrupt forestry officials.

The trafficking of bushmeat thrives in Cameroon in conjunction with the timber industry. Logging workers supplement their incomes by hunting wildlife and sending meat to urban centers.

Besides logging, deforestation results from fuelwood collection and subsistence farming. Overall, Cameroon lost 13.4 percent of its forest cover or 3.3 million hectares between 1990 and 2005 and deforestation rates have increased by 10 percent since the close of the 1990s. The United Nations doesn't classify any of Cameroon's forest cover as untouched primary forest.

Deforestation is beginning to have a significant environmental impact in parts of the country. In the north, deforestation has been blamed for increasing soil erosion, desertification, and reduced quality of pastureland. Overhunting and overfishing is a problem elsewhere in Cameroon. we would not give for our is our environment and our environment is our future.we want a sustainable future.

Cameroons tropical forest is known as home to a great diversity of ecosystems that are unfortunately critically threatened by the timber exploiting industry and transport and processing infrastructure that goes with it. Even the removal of just a small number of tree species causes severe disruptions to the affected ecosystems. As you mentioned, development of a large-scale trade in bushmeat is worsening it .
It seems the laws for forest management are flawed and controls are feeble leading to such situation. Thanks for highlighting this ,Azieh.

Azieh, you have written a very good report, congrats.
Illegal shedding of trees must be stopped with a heavy hand of law from your city, Cameroon. Furthermore, we must plant more trees, acre for them, make sure they grow healthy.
I liked the last line of your report "our environment is our future". I believe this is the basic motive of Tunza Eco-Gen Platform. To ensure our safe future.

Forest harbor over half of the world terrestial biodiversity, sustain the livelihood of over billions of people across the world, destroying it means that we are vanishing our own existence!! Indeed many hands and natural forces have shaped the world around us,adopting new ways for the sustainable use of the resources can be the best solution indeed! Furthermore in case of Nepal, handing of the forest to the rural community to use, protect and manage has been successful in various parts of the country.Hope such kind of initiatives will be there in cameroon for the existing problem about forest !!!

Hallo Bro Azieh, thank you for your wonderful article on biodiversity conservation, you have captured most of what is happening in the ground in Africa. One way to approach the issue on poaching is on Environmental education among young children and youths ,when you teach young generation on importance of biodiversity conservation, they will grow up as responsible future citizens who will nurture all the resources they have . Thank you once again.

Thank you for the article, Azieh! The thing is that Cameroon is blessed with its beautiful environment full of green forests. Then businesses take it for granted and exploit the forests.
We had same situation in Korea also. 70% of land is mountain in Korea so we exploited the forests and gone to very bad situation like air pollution and landslides. So, Cameroon must keep its environment before it gets too late.

Sustainable forest management is the key requirement in many countries like Cameroon suffering with massive exploitation of forest resources at present.Community forest approach has been sucessful in many parts of Nepal and has been able to help in community upliftment as well as increment of forest stocks.Hope that Cameroon government will look for the appropriate solution approaching to susatinablility.Thank for sharing Azieh.

Deforestation is really bad. Forest is the habitat to all millions of organisms. Destroying forest means destroying their life and destroying human civilization.
You have rightly said, we want( or mainly need) sustainable future.
Hope Cameroon comes out with better solution to the existing problem of poaching, logging and exploitation of non timber resources.
