Road Sharing Experiment in Cebu

by | 04-11-2014 20:08 recommendations 0

Last September 28th, the Cebu Green Loop Plan Organizers , in partnership with the Cebu City Hall, were able to successfully perform the road-sharing experiment in one of the busy streets of Cebu. Road sharing experiment was first introduced in 2011 by Atty. Antonio Oposa Jr. where he convinced the city hall to close the city's longest street, Osmena Boulevard, to vehicles.

Pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, runners, sports enthusiasts and other Cebuanos who love physical activities like Zumba and Yoga took part in the said activity. Street art exhibits were also done along the road.

The Sunday road-sharing scheme is part of a greater campaign, called the Cebu Green Loop Plan, for well-managed and sustainable urban growth in the city.

The movement was initiated by students and teachers of the University of San Carlos College of Fine Arts and Architecture. They are joined by experts in urban planning, landscape architecture, and environmental science and law.

Although many are doubtful on the effectiveness of this one-day event scheme in translating it into a long-term transportation policies, the organizers pointed out other cities who made this possible. Specifically, they stated that the Netherlands, a country famous for its bike-crazy citizens, also started with just a car-free day.

Looking at the bigger picture, this kind of activity does not only promote 'walkability' in the city but also reduction of the carbon footprints. I can only imagine how much carbon footprints is reduced if this scheme is imposed in a long-term. This will be a long battle, considering that the people are not accustomed to the activity, but this will be a battle worth fighting for.

Riding a bicycle is a nice activity. It can be a fund raising for the environment protection and youth empowerment. Riding the bicycle is an exercise...good way in maintaining good health in the same way a good health for the environment.

Great points, Christy! Those factors were also tackled in Mega Cebu (which I will feature in my next reports) in order to attain walkability without compromising the safety of the people.

even if this is not on a long term basis, it still create awareness among the citizens to use bicycles and travel by foot. It can definitely develop a green sense in the minds of those citizens. :)

Its a wonderful idea to reduce carbon foot prints. These sorts of activities are gaining priorities even in my country Nepal. Number of bicycle riders are increasing in cities. It feels good to here such news from across the globe :)

Closing the busy or main streets for vehicles or car free day are great ways to encourage public to at least try walking. It's not only good for body and sound mind but also for environment and for pocket as well . I think every week , there should be 1 car free day in all cities. Thanks for sharing ,Mary.

Road-sharing experiment by enthusiastic Cebuanos is an excellent initiative. Even for a day, it saves a lot of carbon footprint.
If there are dedicated cycle lanes, it is really very effective to implement such moves as Dubai has introduced such lanes & in future planned to extend it in more areas.
    Thanks for report, Mary.

Walkability is now a hot issue in South Korea also. Walking and riding bicycle are definitely eco-friendly transportation. But most roads are inconvenient or dangerous for walking and riding bicycle. So not only campaigns and education, improving the 'walkability' in terms of infrastructure is one of the most important elements to encourage eco-friendly transportation.

Riding bicycle is great way to maintain sound health of both environment and ourselves.
And we must realize that ocean is made by collection of tiny droplets of water.
Let's hope it gets successfully translated into longterm policies in near future.
