Education for Sustainable Development ( ESD )

by | 16-11-2014 00:08 recommendations 0

Education is important because Education gives people the chance to change their life , define their future and take control of their destiny .

As a Youth Activist and educator working in Yemen and studied in Pakistan throughout all my work and study experiences, I have come to know that I am interested in the area of Education that is " Education for Sustainable Development " Because this area of education allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future.

Education for Sustainable Development  (ESD) : means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty reduction, sustainable consumption and recycling .

ESD It not that easy area that we can find it in our teaching and learning systems specially in the Arab Region, Because  the pressing issue in ESD that it also requires teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behavior and take action for sustainable development.
So ESD needs a lot of changes in the education and the methods of  teaching we are practicing now a days .

From my point of view,  I strongly see that ESD can support youth in their role as change makers by different ways and ideas as following :

1- Promoting ESD through making it compulsory in the course pack of education up to high school will support youth to enjoy learning and to be aware of their rights and to do their responsibilities for a butter world to live.

2- ESD can support youth by allow every human being to acquire the knowledge , skills and values that will make them able to be a change agents and shape a sustainable future .

3- ESD supporting youth in understanding and in acting to transform the social, cultural, political and economical structures which affect their lives and others.

4-ESD supporting youth by guiding us to the road map to select our future fields that we like and we have an interest in it. Therefore youth will be more active and working hard in different fields with a full responsibility to keep our plant a better place for them to live and the coming generations.

From all the above points and by the efforts of the Government, Privet sectors, NGOs and Young People themselves, we can Promote ESD and focus more in our projects and activities that will support youth in their role as change agents.

And if we talk about Innovative solutions for ESD, I am strongly believe that Youth can be a driving force for action in Education and Sustainable Development by the following points :

1-    Involving youth in the decision making process, because they are important source of creativity, enthusiasm and are drivers of social changes.

2-    Empowered the youth with sufficient knowledge, enabling skills and appropriate attitudes and values.

3-    Rise awareness that enable young people to comprehend their relationship with the environment and make concerted efforts to conserve it and create a more sustainable and equitable present and future.

4-    Providing young people with a high quality education and free access to knowledge and resources as well as providing them with appropriate employment opportunities to enable them to acquire skills and facilitate their transition from education to employment.

5-    Recalling the commitment of UN and its member states to recognize the priorities of youth as an integral part in the future development including sustainable development and the post -2015 Development agenda negotiations.

It is rightly said "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world" and is essential for sustainable development. Youth has immense potential to activate any change/revolution . They should be given quality education and resources. Well done , Sadam. Well written report,

Yes, I believe in Sadam. Youth stimulates knowledge and inspiration, uphold socio-environmental activism, engage to foster dialogue and unity, enforce environmental policies, advance the implementation, and wobble awareness among citizens and government through ESD. One comment is that you should quote the UNEP in making the meaning of the ESD. Thank you :)

Education is the source of developement for communities and as long as people are aware of its importance the world would become a better place . Sustainable developement workshops like this one are the key for youth to see things from another perspective for the long term in order for them to have a clearer vision on the futur

"Promoting ESD through making it compulsory in the course pack of education up to high school" This is what we need in every part of world.Making ESD compulsion is one of the best possible way to make young generation really know the importance of Sustainable development.

You are right. Education is indeed important. It allows us to explore things and get a grasp of how the world works through different perspectives. Education is a power we need to harness in order to address issues that humanity is faced with.

Thank you for your report. It is really important to everyone, not just the youths, because it might be able to partly change people's perspective on Sustainable Development through education activities as you discussed above. However, as an economist, I think these education activities should include economic knowledge, such as, economic benefit/cost of Sustainable Development, in order to give concrete evidences.
