COP in my city

       Nepal the country of mountains , glaciers ,country rich in biodiversity,the one where majority of people depend on agriculture.But will it remain the same in the future?NO.The mountains and glaciers are already melting,the biodiversity status is declining,agricultural productivity is degraded. According to World Bank (2011), agriculture contributes 38.14% of overall National GDP . But, due to the impacts of Climate, we are not getting as much productivity from agricultural lands as it have to.  Moreover, ADB report says that Nepal may loss almost 10% of its GDP by 2100 due to Climate- driven events like melting glaciers.

           Since the Industrial Revolution began around 1750, human activities have contributed substantially to climate change by adding CO2 and other heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere. These greenhouse gas emissions have increased the greenhouse effect and caused Earth?s surface temperature to rise. The primary human activity affecting the amount and rate of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. In the present context, the world is already observing GHG concentrations of 400ppm mark in theatmosphere, hence, mitigation is very crucial. Developed countries should raise their pre-2020 target topeak emission by 2015 (25% to 40% below 1990 levels) in order to keep global warming below 1.5 degreeCelsius and not plunge into deep crisis of climate change. If this doesn?t happen, the biggest sufferers will be the poor countries like Nepal despite of their low emission.While we share only 0.027 % of global emission we are ranked 4th in the vulnerable list of Climate Change impacts. We are becoming the victim of draught,flood,mountain melting which has caused massive destruction in Nepal recently and the destruction shall continue further.

    To pressurize the COP20 by UNFCC,climate march was held around the globe where youths demanded world leaders ?Climate Justice Right Now?and Nepali youths were also part of it. And at present COP in my city is being practiced to facilitate events in different parts of Nepal along with local youth leaders from different places.It was initiated by an NGO based in France,CliMates.As a continuity of programme it was organized in Pokhara yesterday(29th November 2014).

The programme was divide into different sessions as follow:-

*Knowledge Sharing Session(Climate Change and UNFCC COP History

    Kaveeta Gautam(Country Ambassador for COP in my city) gave presentation on UNFCC COP history.It was an informative session.Also there was a presentaion on Climate change.

*National Level Simulations (Different stake holders)
  In this session the participants were divided into different different stakeholders as community,municipality,local authority,different ministry,NGO/InGO's ,Un agency etc.They came up with different action plans.

 *Global Level simulation(Different Parties of COP)

  In this session division was made into Annex I,Annex II,Youth,Non Annex parties and negotiations were made.

* Feedback session

 The programme was knowledgeable as well as fun.Hope the voices of youth,SIDs and LDCs will be heard in the COP20 and hence justice will be given,climate justice will be met in actions not only in words.

    Agree with you that industrial revolution , urbanisation and modernisation have all added to Co2 emission , and hence global warming. SO events like COP , Climate Summits are needed to come up with solid solutions to environmental concerns. Thanks for sharing , Alina.

    Thanks for posting report along with some global and national facts!!!
    And "0.027 % of global emission we are ranked 4th in the vulnerable list of Climate Change impacts" this is what needs to be change. Climate change doesn't bother with borders.so to change the scenario, we should approach globally.

    Interesting event indeed... since the climate change effects are not didtributed equally but the youth and children are the most affected generation !!! In this era,many conventions,conference,workshop regarding climate change are mushrooming globally.it doesnt make any sense if they are not implemented from the grass root level..COP in my city is another emerging event,hope this will bridge the gap between the theortical knowledge and the real practice !thanks for sharing alina !!

    At the rate at which we are experiencing these global impacts world wide it means we all entirely as a global village have to double if not triple our efforts to taming these uncontrollable monster. The more we are the better off since the smaller contributing countries may as well be the most devastated like Nepal as an example. Good picture quality there too Alina.
