2014 Greeneration Youth Summit in the Philippines

The 2nd Greeneration Youth Summit for Luzon was held held on November 24, 2014 at the Philippine International Convention Center.  The theme was ?A Gathering for Youth Empowerment on Climate Change?.  The summit was attended by over 700 youth leaders representing high schools, colleges and universities from the island of Luzon.


The Greeneration Summit is one of the activitites during the celebration of National Climate Change Consciousness Week, which is held in the Philippines on the last week of November every year. The main activities are the Bike Tour, Youth Summit, LGU Summit and Business Summit.


The 1st National Bicycle Day tour had two routes. One passed through the Northern cities of Manila - San Juan, Manila, Navotas, Malabon, Caloocan, Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig while another group passed through the Southern cities of Taguig, Paranaque, Muntinlupa, Las Pinas, Pasay, Makati and Mandaluyong. Outside of Metro Manila, bike riders gathered in Central Luzon, Northern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.


We were invited by Climate Change Commission Vice-Chair Secretary Lucille Sering, who was the opening speaker. We organized a group of youth from San Pablo City to attend the Greeneration Summit on Monday, the 24th.  They participated in the Summit which had Greeneration Ambassadors sharing their advocacy.  News Reporter Tom Araullo spoke about the Role of Media on Raising Awareness.  TV host Bianca Gonzalez shared 10 Environment-friendly tips, while young Mayor Pie Alvarez of San Vicente, Palawan discussed the Eco-Town concept. Keynote speaker was National Youth Commissioner Dingdong Dantes.


It was the turn of Local Government Executives and officials to participate in the LGU Summit on Tuesday, November 25. Here they showcased the climate change initiatives of local and provincial units.  They also discussed how climate change policies can be integrated into development plans.


On Wednesday, November 25, a Business Summit were they discussed Business Solutions to Climate Change. Companies of all sizes were invited to raise consciousness on adaptation and mitigation activities. 


The US Agency for International Development, the Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Education, the National Youth Commission were among the main supporters of the Climate Change Consciousness Week.

    Greeneration Youth Summit-the tile itself is so catchy. Attended by 700+sure must have had a great impact and ideas from many bright minds among these 700 youths. Events like this are very effective in mobilising youth towards climate change/environment movements.
