Roadways that can generate Solar Power!!! |
---|
What if instead of cement and asphalt, roads were paved with solar panels? What if that sunlight could be harnessed for electricity? We might all have thought of this at least once while strolling out on a sunny afternoon that something should be done of the solar energy that flittered away into useless heat. I came across a video that went viral earlier this year with around 18 million views. Solar Roadways, created by Julie and Scott Brusaw, is exploring the feasibility of building drivable roads using solar panels. The original intent was to help solve the climate crisis. The U.S. has over 72,000 square kilometers of asphalt and concrete surfaces exposed to the sun, if it would be covered with solar road panels, then it could produce over three times the amount of energy that they use as a nation that's using clean, renewable energy instead of coal. According to Brusaw solar road panels could theoretically be laid anywhere from motorways and parking lots to pavements and playgrounds. He believes that such a prospect could transform the existing motorway infrastructure, prevent accidents and ultimately help save the planet from an environmental disaster. "In the U.S., roughly half of greenhouse gases are generated by burning fossil fuels to create electricity," he says. "Another 25% comes out of our tailpipes," adds Brusaw. "By replacing coal with solar and making electric vehicles practical which could lead to the end of internal combustion engines we could theoretically cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75%. Some calculations indicate that if we resurfaced all the roads in America with their solar panels, it would generate approximately three times the nation?s electric need. Additionally, this technology could also be used to pave bike paths, sidewalks, and parking lots. The world?s first solar bike lane, the so called solar road is being built in Netherlands and it was opened to public last week. It is pilot project for a much larger vision of paving roads with similar solar cell slabs. It was a daunting task for engineers as needs not only to create particular design that allows as much sunlight as possible to hit the solar cells but should be safe and practical for cyclists. To learn that pilot project like these are running, researchers are toiling for clean energy, gives a satisfying feeling.
Thanks for sharing :)

At a first glance, it seems wonderful - programmable roads that can do almost anything you need it to. Upon further inspection, however, there would have to be certain things in place for this to happen. For example, the budget needed to implement these roads would be costly. While they do save money, it would probably take over $1 million dollars to do one area.

Quite amazing , thanks for sharing , Mohit. It's high time that researchers & scientists invent such innovative ideas to incorporate sustainability & eco friendly raw material in building basic infrastructure.

BUT I THINK IT IS USED IN GERMANY,,

AMAZING DUDE

Alternate gain from this is road perfection
Posted 01-12-2014 00:56
I think it is very expensive
Posted 01-12-2014 00:50
we try to implement the green energy
Posted 01-12-2014 00:50
But some negative effects are also there
Posted 01-12-2014 00:48
In USA , this step has been taken

wow, very informative, thanks for sharing

WOW, I would have never thought that such innovations exist ! this is wonderful , mixing technology with enviromntal necessities

The Netherlands already do this. Check out their news about constructing the solar panel road lane, i believe some of the parts are finished.

Wow!! thats something to be proud of
Posted 30-11-2014 21:56
wow, this seems great!

Quite different yet amazing news. The idea is simply awesome. The main advantage i see beside the production of clean energy, is the surplus amount of energy generated. That could be economical in long run as well.

Thank you for sharing. I believe Germany has something similar like solar highway, too :)

Wow! amazing news Mohit. If further studies are made & this is turned fruitful, it will be very beneficial & sustainable.

Its worth commenting on as many times as Osama Alzoubi did, i cant believe somebody thought of such an ingenious plan!!

Wow!!! I saw the Solar Roadways hyperlink, thanks Mohit Taljera I think the road way had vivid and quite clear road signs too, something that can be more advantageous to people with poor vision especially night time hours.I hope this prototype can really make a blast in the Netherlands!!
