Cyber Extension for Agriculture Development |

Innovation on agriculture tends to increase due to the development of information and communication technology. As the result, the gap between rural and urban agriculture are not easily denied. For instance, agricultural extension workers always confront innovation gaps as they complete their tasks as farmers? partner. In other hand, research institutions harbors many funds to produce innovations. So, both the workers and institutions must be working together to solving agricultural problems. The collaboration of among the workers, institutions and farmers at the ultimate pace can produce a novelty on the development of agricultural sector. For instance, Bogor Agricultural University and agricultural extension workers have found a beneficial application of information technology integrated with computer which was named as the CYBER EXTENSION. The application can be integrated not only to computer but also that can be integrated to handphone. There are three systems developed of cyber extension which are: online consultation system (web consultation), handphone - based internet system and Android technology – based smart telephone. Cyber extension is very useful for rural farmers to increase crop yields and to consult with researchers about occuring agricultural problems. In some of countries, the cyber is functioned to escalate the learning of society. By convergence communication, the cyber can be benefited by society, reserchers and extensioners. According the Jakarta Post (2013), cyber extension is a new hope in agriculture and rural development. In Bogor Agricultural University (Institut Pertanian Bogor), young agriculture students are engaged annually to promote and implement the uses of cyber extension to local communities in rural areas. The regard of promoting and implementaing cyber extension notably to local farmer is named as IPB Goes to Field. Cyber extension of IPB can be spread out with purpose to help local farmers build connectivity between IPB and the farmers. It will be beneficial programme both for IPB and local farmers. As probed to IPB young agriculturists, young agriculture can gain new experience and implement their knowledge tranformed in form of virtual xyber extension while as reviewed from local farmers, local farmers can get multibenefits of gaining information and ancillary related agriculture problems in form consultations from the IPB?s researchers. .

Information is surely needed if we aim for the better system of agriculture. Even though farming may not have much to do with computer but I think farmer still need access of information in order to do the agriculture in right way both to themselves and to the nature.

Bogor agriculture university and the team have done a commendable initiation. For sure cyber extension will be more effective than the traditional extension methodologies and farmers can get suggestions from IPB consultations researchers. These will certainly be effective from time and financial point of view. On the other hand youug agriculturist will get to know about real problems and context of farmers.
