post harvest in Agriculture |
---|
Being a student of agriculture today i will like to discuss about the agriculture and food security. Not only producing in the field is entirely important for feeding of the population, conserving the production is also important for the prospects. In the produced area, only 10% is consumed not the rest, the production should be conserved and should be transported to the deficit area and there lies the significance of the post harvest of the agriculture. In my country, production is higher in eastern part and lack of food is seen in the western part of nepal with insufficient technologies to transport and lack of expertise in the proper post harvest technologies, unconsumed food is being wasted in the over productive area and hunger prevails in the low production area.
Recently i got to involve in the research in the M. Sc horticulture thesis which is being carried out in the post harvest technology. with cauliflower used as commodity, different packaging plastics are being used to increase the post harvest life of the cauliflower. After opening the plastics, which are of different function, it has been primarily observed that freshness of the plastic covered commodity is as fresh as from the plant and it has also been found to increase in the sweetness or carbohydrate content of the commodity. with preliminary result, it has been justified that with development of proper post harvest technologies food can be travelled long distance with better quality, food security cannot be solve alone by the increasing the production as the land are already giving the maximum production, increasing the post harvest period of foods and decreasing waste could help more. thank you. expecting your valuable comments. |

Production Augmentation & effective transportation is the key for equitable distribution of food.
Thanks for reporting Sabin. Bio Degradable & natural packing measures may be taken.

Dear Sabin thank you for sharing your involvement in thesis regarding post harvest technology. Yeah I completely agree the fact only production is not enough to secure food security. Efficient and balanced distribution of produced food is the key to sustainable production and consumption. Post harvest technology like packaging cauliflower in plastic can be a very good idea but we should also make sure that such packaging stuffs should be eco- friendly :)

Yeah,as you said prodction only cant maintain food security. In absence of it's proper management it gets wated causing deficient food supply as well as loss of effort in production.Plastics have been helping to transfer foods fresh but hope that there will be some other ways than it.Thank you for sharing.

I saw the research and really love the approach.
It's very great if we can provide fresh food to all the parts of our countries.
Like Christy has also pointed out, I am concerned about increasing use of the plastics thus inviting many environmental problems along.I wish best of luck for the success of the research and hope to get posite finding from there :)

Thanks for an interesting subject . Agree with you that apart from importance of higher yield , production output , safe transportation of food is also equally important so that needy regions get fresh , tasty and nutritious food. Gunny bags/jute bags , are heard to be one of the best ways to store and transport food.

Thank you for the information. I newly learned that Nepal is divided into Eastern and Western region in terms of food production. It's great that the people residing in the western side can enjoy fresh foods traveled from the eastern side thanks to the plastic packaging. But packing something widely consumed with plastic means that there will be huge plastic wastes. So, it's our responsibility to make the package more sustainable(like bio degradable plastic).
