Tunza Eco Generation School Awareness Program

'Seven up' ( where every person counts number like 1,2 3.. and at the multiple of 7 he/she has to say seven up), an interactive game to begin the program and count the total number of participants, we played before formally starting the program.

"Let me begin with simple question", I said to the enthusiastic young students with high anticipation from us that could be seen in their eyes. "How many of us use Facebook?" I asked. There was lots of hand raised and I asked twitter use to raise their hand. And finally I asked how many of you are into Tunza Eco Generation. Curiosity level rosed among them. "Don't worry", I comforted. And this is how we began our first School Awareness Program(from now on SAP) at Gyandarshan School.


We gave our introduction to them. While I was giving little hint about what our program will be like Aksana Dallakoti( E-gen Member) and Shishir Dhakal(E-gen Member)  distributed E-gen Pen, scale and paper to them and asked them to give answer to the 'Eco-quiz' Sudarshan Dhakal( E-gen Member)  wrote in the white board. The quiz was about "How green are you?" They gave the answer.


After that we distributed Eco Generation Brochures. I told them to have a simple glance at it. Then I asked if any of us here are Samsung Users( more than half of the students raised the hand). And I explained them about what is Eco Generation, How big Eco-Generation family is and its world wide popularity among youths. Also I told them Eco generation is exclusively for youth like us to explore our local environmental condition, share it among youths of world and put your environmental voice forward. I also explained them about interesting events Eco Generation brings like Essay competition, Photo competition, Tee shirt designing and many more. I informed them about the gifts and awards they reward to winners of the monthly events, GYELS(greatest event Eco-Generation) and E-gen egional Ambassador oppurtunities. At the same time, I informed them about UNEP, UNDP, UNESCO and TUNZA, What actually CSR means and so on. They seemed very interested.


After that Aksana Dallakoti talked about youths involvement in Environment related activities, how can we contribute towards conservation of the environment. She also talked about importance of bio diversity, animal conservation and ecological cycle. She informed about the Chitwan National Park and how we can learn by making frequent visit to those places.


Then Shishir Dhakal encouraged them to unleash their potentiality, create a group and get engaged into environmental related activities.


Sudarshan Dhakal gave the some facts related to water, air, land and noise pollution, Green house gases, climate change, global warming and list goes on. He also explained about the effect of chemical fertilizers, various minor activities like( not switching off the lights while not using, use of old filament bulbs instead of CFL or LED, littering, not differentiating between degradable and non degradable wastes, and so forth which contribute to climate change). He gave some scientific proof to verify ongoing climate change as well.


After informing them about our activities responsible for climate change, I shared some green tips like using LED light, organic farming, kitchen gardening, solar energy and solar cell, wind energy, promoting of local foods, sharing environmentally friendly behavior with family members as well, gifting natural products as gift, supporting environmental  groups, planting tress and other green tips which I found in the Tunza Eco Generation resources and Ambassador Report.


Towards the end, we asked them to write at least five commitments and activities they will do from now on. We did this to evaluate how much they learned from us and how much interested they were into environment conservation. I am super glad to see how awesome commitments they wrote. And at the same commitment paper, we told them to write "I will Protect My Environment" in big letter. We gifted them Tunza Eco Generation CDs to school so they can use this as the resource material in coming days. We took photograph after that.


I am really satisfied with the interest shown by the children. We had great time, frequently engaging them into writing commitment, answering quiz and asking them question. Distributing my business cards, Eco-generation brochures and pens and scale, informing them a lot about environment and so on. And I am thankful to Eco Generation for providing us promotional goods and Gyandarshan school for providing us such opportunities. Also, my happiness knew no bound when ecology teacher and Principal sir requested to frequently come to the school and give the boost their motivation.


And this is just the begining...

    Thanks , Rahul , for sharing about your event thru such vivid report. I like your ice breaker , structure of your session , concluding by quiz , making them write their environment commitment. All in all a very well organised session . You did a real good job in educating so many youths in one go . Principal and Ecology Teacher extending you open invitation is an indication how effective was your session. Keep it up!

    I liked the idea of working with team of Tunza representatives. They will also learn from your vast experience & will in turn spread more awareness.
    The students seem to lean a lot from this session.

    I don't know what to say, I became speechless. Hats off to you and your team. It's really inspiring, I am really proud of you Rahul. The students seem so interested in your session and their commitment look so good. You look like a professional environment teacher now :p
    It's a really well organized and operated session. It's too good to be an event done by volunteer youth. Thumbs up!!
