In my last article, I introduced Managaha Island, an ocean paradise off the coast of Saipan. In this report, I would like to introduce the Latte Stones of the Mariana Archipelago. These interestingly shaped pillars are unique to the Marianas, much like the Moai on Easter Island. It is also a symbol of the Chamorros, the natives of the Mariana Islands. While the Moais are related to theories that suggest that the stone statues led to the deforestation of Easter Island, the Latte Stones are actually wise inventions of the Chamorros. The Chamorros were the first settlers of the Mariana Islands, and they had to adapt to the islands ecosystem. Instead of developing the island, the Chamorros found various ways to live in harmony with the nature around them. One of them is the Latte Stones. These stones have a distinct shape, with a pillar that usually narrows to the top and a keystone on top of it. They were used as the base structures of the traditional houses on the islands. The interesting thing about these stones is the design itself. The Chamorros were wise enough to design the stones to serve various purposes. The first role was the most simple: they were stable supports that were safe from the attacks of mites or other pests. The second role was to prevent mice or other animals from reaching the house. This was done by the capstone placed on top of each pillar. Lastly, the stones protected the houses from excess moisture and also provided some work space under the house by raising the house high up in the air. It is also supposed that the stones showed a family?s social status: the bigger the pillars, the richer the family. Furthermore, it is speculated that they served as sacred symbols. Nonetheless, I believe its significance lies in the fact that it was cleverly designed to serve various purposes and that it was a way for the Chamorros to live with nature. It is not only a symbol of the Charmorros, but the importance of design in environmentally friendly lifestyles. BELOW: THE LATTE STONES CAN BE FOUND IN THE CNMI FLAG |
