Dry and Green

Waza National Park from an airy view gives impression of no life but habits more than 36 of the world's most precious animals and different genres of special plants and insects.

Waza National Park is among the most interesting parks in Cameroon. Its village and environ have a special build up which makes it Unique in Africa. Its plants and animal species, nature reserve, elephant safaris earned it a reputation of a peaceful anchorage. The small town of Waza often described as the best place for holidays found in the Far North Region of Cameroon continue to appeal tourists despite the current state of insecurity of the area.

Waza National Park

Going to the Park during the dry season, some hundreds of meters into the Park you are having an impression the park is very dry, but a little stroll near the Bungalows and the small restaurant found there tells you another story. In fact you see a wonderful freshness of Green plants that brightens this end. It makes the park even more beautiful and gives you an impression you are in another world.

Scientists from the University of Dschang, Concordia University, World Wildlife Fund, and the North Carolina Zoological Park believe the park is divided into three vegetation zones: woodlands, floodplains, and acacia tree shrubland zones. The woodlands have the most trees while the floodplains have the most herbaceous plants. In a study to measure the amount of edible plants available to elephants in Waza National Park, the researchers found out that the park has a total vegetation of 14 tons.

Located just a few kilometers from the border with Nigeria, the dry, Green, elephant Safari Waza National Park is not having an undisturbed peace. In May 2014, the Park and the Waza village were absorbed by general panic when Boko Haram militants hijacked ten Chinese expatriates. AFP said, during that period, 'the walls of the hotels were crumbling and guest bedrooms remained stubbornly empty'.

Today calm has returned to the park. Because of that incident, Cameroon government sent Special Forces of the Rapid Intervention (BIR) Unit to patrol and protect the zone. There are now more than 5000 soldiers in the Far North Region of Cameroon. Tchad, USA, Russia, the African Union and the UN have promised to help Cameroon and Nigeria quell down the instability either by sending forces to the area or by helping them technically to train soldiers or with an arsenal.
