Sustainable living

Technology has provided us with a lot of advantages and facilities. But it is believed and many people argue that the technological development has lead to the disturbance of the environment and the ecological balance too. A lot of harmful gas is produced every year by the manufacturing companies and along with it huge amount of toxic waste is produced by those companies. But it is the same technology that is doing something in order care for the earth.

We the general people too can do something in order to reduce the disturbance in the environment caused by the technology. Technology which can be recycled can be used in order to discourage the products which have the tag "Use and Throw".

Firstly I think it is wise to use the rechargeable batteries rather than the normal ones so that there is less amount of waste created due to used up batteries. If we use the rechargeable batteries, it helps to reduce the amount of waste. Although the initial price may be more for that of rechargeable batteries but after recharging it for five to six times we can get the value for our money. As a result more rechargeable batteries will be in demand and non-rechargeable batteries will slowly stop being produced. As a result we can reduce the pollution and created by the battery manufacturing companies.

Secondly we can prefer soft copies compared to hard copies for the documents. This helps us to reduce the production of paper ultimately leading to less exploitation of the resources. I specially do not like when people print the documents whenever they like and most of the times they are unnecessary. Many people say that hard copy makes something formal, but I am totally against it. So whenever possible I prefer soft copies. PDF can be used with read only format so that our document stays original. While in other cases soft copies can preferred, in which we can edit the document with ease.

I also think that it will be wise that if colleges make e-book reader compulsory, then the resources for making the papers will be saved again. In comparisons to the course books for higher level, the cost 6-7 books will be enough to buy an e-book reader. Many books are found free of cost and it will also be easier for teachers to share their handout rather than printing it every time and giving to their students. Even the e-books are cheaper as they do not have printing cost. With regards to the strain caused to the eyes by looking at the screen producing radiations, e-book reader such as Kindle Paper white have technology which do not produce radiations and have background as that of white papers. Furthermore this device functions for at least 2-3 weeks despite its heavy use. They are portable and are many times smaller compared to the heavy books and can store up to 1000 of thick volume books.

Well these are steps I have been following in my life and I know there are many more wise steps. Actually this is a revolution which is not done in front of the parliament house or in the public roads, but the revolution done through the activities. If all of us follow these practicable methods then it will put pressure on the companies to produce recyclable products.

So are we all ready to act for the revolution?

Thanks for sustainable living tips. Actually for our every day-to-day action , we can think of better , more sustainable option like :
using home made cleaners rather than using chemical ones .Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda into 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water. Store and keep. Use it for removal of water deposit stains on shower stall panels, bathroom chrome fixtures, windows, bathroom mirrors, etc.
To reduce energy waste, simply unplug appliances when not in use .
Use cloth napkin , not paper napkin.
Use crumpled up newspapers to wash/clean windows-instead of chemically made.
    etc

There are million ways of leading a sustainable life. Thanks for an inspiring post.

I like your simple ideas Sabin. They are really effective & practical.
Use of printed documents will be totally wiped out in near future. Many offices are going paperless.
Even UAE is promoting e-governance in most of its departments. Most of the services are paperless & are on-line.
This is commendable & nature friendly.

These are all very good ideas Sabin. We are actually using soft papers in our school so that we consume less paper for printing documents and I would like to say that I completely agree with you on the matter of using technology to help us conserve the nature.
