Youth migration and the scenario in Nepal |
---|
An estimated 400,000 young people enter the labor market each year in Nepal and, in the absence of decent employment opportunities within the country, particularly in rural areas, migration to India and overseas for employment has become an increasingly attractive option as well as a last resort for many youth. The Department of Foreign Employment estimates that around 1,500 young Nepalese leave for employment to countries other than India each day. The migration might be different with different purposes, some for studies, some for work and some for visit. As youth are the most active age group, they are considered as the pillar of the nation. The youth migration have severe impact in various sector and most importantly being agricultural country, many of the country land are left fallow due to lack of working manpower. Even in some remote part people die as they couldn't get medicine cause there is no any youth who can bring them to nearest hospital. The situation is worst especially in villages with children, elderly people and women only. Beside there is drastic increase in remittance flow and has contributed significantly in reducing poverty from 41.8% to 25.2% just over a decade and which is not the sustainable one. The differences we can observe in various technological device like cell phone, internet and many more, some of them are being successfully utilized in best way many enthusiastic youth which in turn contributing in nation development. Despite, many youth are attracted in foreign countries job, where they couldn't get the good job according to their qualification and potentiality, the reason behind is country couldn't create any kind of opportunities focusing youth neither in industrial sector nor in other technological sector. We youth have qualification in our hand, but are compelled to spend time without job. There is unrest and indiscipline prevalent in the system due to high politicization, the country is facing unemployment problem in the present scenario.
In today¡¯s increasingly globalized and interconnected world, youth represent the most interconnected generation of all. Young migrants need to be given opportunities to participate, to express themselves, to be listened to and to have opportunities created in their own land. Being youth as the most energetic and active age group, youth migration itself is a big issue for the country like Nepal.Until the country couldn't bring managed system, policies and better implementation we cannot imagine the development of country. At the same time, if we wait until all being perfect to move,we will never move ahead. |

I would like to share some of the success story of youths who went abroad, completed education, learned something and are doing their own business. (now they are job creator not job seeker)
There were two brothers who went abroad and returned back home after some (8) years. They ran 'Hope Departmental store. the concept of departmental store was not much developed. Now this is one of the most popular especially in Bharatpur. Moreover, such departmental store are getting established in many everypart of Bharatpur.
another department store 'Aastha( literally translated as Belief) Departmental store' owners also migrated to some countries before returning back Nepal. After coming back they also estbalished departmental store and they also run Cow farm in one of the rural area of Chitwan.

Youth migration has become common culture among youth for that last two decades. Reasons might be many, but the ultimate reasons are security, right kind of education for children and high aspiration of living quality life( well paid job, security, education, to name few).
In my opinion we can change the scenario if we can compel government to encourage youth led enterprise, innovation or start ups. Moreover, tax reduction especial for youth(16-40) led organisation. Moreover, policy like Giving loan at minimum rate to entrepreneur youths could be effective solution. and Main stream media should highlight successful stories of youths so that it can be source of hope and ideal for others.

Thanks for a very genuine and debatable topic. This is an issue not only with Nepal but with other developing nations as well, with India itself. To minimise this , govts must offer better paid job , enough employment opportunities , build educational infrastructure to attract or retain their local young talent. I agree this brain drain kind of situation is not sustainable and certainly not good for countries losing their most active segment i.e. youths to other countries.

Well written Bhawana. Somehow, I agree that youth must be channelized into the main stream in order the nation is to prosper but job less & ideal youth is not acceptable. They can find jobs or tasks suitable to their qualifications. Make a beginning, even small, then the actual capability & slowly may rise. This is my view.
Hope for best.

Yeah Bhawana, I don't want to complain solely the government. Yeah the government is such instable and corruped here but more than that I see the weakness among us. We lack the vision, we are not confident about innovation. We have abundant of jobs around if we like to create and work on but the fact underlying for youth migration is brain drain. Agricultural entrepreneurship and eco- tourism are the potential and successful areas in our context. Hopefully our generation and we figure the potentials and possibilities in our country well. Keep sharing :)
