My little steps towards sustainability

Interacting with people was what I never get bothered of, so may be why teaching has been a hobby for me since childhood. I have been teaching tuition classes as a part time job since six years (as soon as I completed my grade 10th study). There are many reasons behind like most importantly I didn't want my parents to have financial stress and strains for my higher studies, also I loved teaching and sharing my knowledge. Moreover, there are many parents and students who have always appreciated my teaching skill. I utilize my earning for expenses during volunteering and other basic expenditures like stationary, travel expenses, college fees, clothing etc. through teaching. Even my mobile phone is what I bought myself and finally being an eco- enthusiast I planned to install a solar panel with my savings.

In my report some months ago, I had already mentioned the pathetic situation of scheduled Power Cut-off (load shedding) of eleven hours per day in my country Nepal. We are compelled to arrange our daily routine according to that schedule. The most difficulty we faced was for using the internet facility and studying without electricity. Most of us use chargeable lights during power cut off but those are not so durable. Well off people use invertors as an alternative but it consumes lots of energy during charging. With the growing awareness in people, solar power use has gained some popularity in my country too. These days in the many cities the street lamps and offices use solar power. But the problem for layman was high cost of installation for solar power.

Let me share with you how I managed for installing solar panel. Well, I had some savings from my teaching since long, I used some during my elating visit to beautiful Korea for GYELS 2015 and then I had about $108 remaining. When I visited the solar supplier I came to know that it will cost about $220 for installing 51watt solar panel. So after returning back from Korea I resumed my classes. But as my exam was approaching nearby I taught only one group of four students this time by which I earned $40 in a month. Seeing my devotion towards solar my parents supported me $75. Happiness had no limit when my dream came true. Finally, on 28th March, 2015 I can install solar panel of 51 watt capacity in my house. It supports 6 LED lighting bulbs and 2 solar DC fans. Instead of fans I chose to use internet using convertor (I am very happy :) )

Though hydro electricity and solar power both are renewable forms of energy and pollutes vast less than fossil fuel. Solar power and hydroelectricity both have some advantages and disadvantages over one another. While the low production cost and high stability favors hydroelectricity in terms of portability and access solar energy is preferred. In place where water source is not abundant or the production of hydroelectricity is not enough to meet the demand (like in my country). Being a responsible conscious youth, it's my little step towards sustainability and if every of us do our part we will certainly achieve a healthy, green and sustainable environment. Hope you enjoyed going through my journey in this report.

Let us contribute in our best possible way. Lets go Green!

Cheers :)

Even though hydroelectricity and solar power both are renewable, Solar power would be much better for in our context especially in Chitwan. As Sun will be abailable everyday :D
and Wow LED lights too. That's what we have done in our home too :)

Awww... Bindu am so in love with your determination. Nigeria also have power issues which the government has been battling for years. I have had my eyes on solar but never had your kind of zeal because of lack of funds.

Now I know better. I will be prudent in my savings onward
