KEEDAfie- SElfie with Insects

by | 04-04-2015 23:08 recommendations 0

Before I start I would like to ask you few questions-
How many selfies do you have in your phone/tabs?
How often do you take the selfie?
Name at least one product that involves/comes from insect?
Insects!!! What does it mean to you?

Well it could have been easy to answer first two questions. Any product that comes/involves insect??? Well its even easier. I would say honey, fruits and foods, silk cloth and other countless objects that has become integral part of our lives. For the final question, please put it in the comment. What does it mean to you before and what it means after going throgh report.

Did you know insects occupies about more than 75% of all the living species. It means if you say four hellos to randomly to any organism, 3 hellos will likely be conveyed to Insects. Amazing!!! Right? But how often do we even notice a insect excpet for the mosquito (if you are living in tropical region). The answer would mostly be null.

Every third bite is the contribution of the bees alone. More intrestingly seventy of the top 100 foods are pollinated by bees. If latest reports are too be accepted than Bees are declining seriously. They wont be going alone. They have seats booked for us too.

That's just an example of  bees. Just imagine how dull will our life be without the colorfull butterflies. The one which assist us in gardening by pollinating and letting our flower bloom to the fullest. Dragonflies out there helps to balance the natural population of the insects. The Lady Bird. Its actully gardener's best friend. Controlling the pest and others.
Sad but true, we are all loosing them. Day by day and every hour. The ultimate consequences has to be bore by human themselves.

Knowing these facts and with our keen interest in both insect and selfie, our team ( as a part of online social campaign) during the Lucknow workshop amalgated 'Insect' and 'Selfie'-Conceptcoined it  'KEEDAfie'. Where KEEDA is the literal translation of insects in Nepali/Hindi. KEEDAfie means Selfie with insect. This is the movement brough by the six youths from Nepal and India. Named B-TRAPS.

Brojo K Basumatary (Assam)

Thang  Phymphu (Manipur)

Rahul Acharya (Nepal)

Ananya Seth (Delhi)

Prashant Bhandari (Nepal)

Shiwani Thakur (Shimla)

As you might have already guessed, the main aim of our movement is to bring insects into the limelight, make them part of everyone's life. We want to highlight how interrelated are insects with every aspect of our life. We believe selfie to be a better if not best vehicle to drive people especially youths into insect biodiversity conservation.

In our KEEDAfie page, we upload the KEEDAfies obtained from around the world and post their scientific name and special characters as well. Its like fun along with knowledge.

Interested in KEEDAfie???
Its easy to take part.
You can join us by simply clicking selfie with the insects through any devices like camera, tablets, tabs, mobiles and many more.
Send us your keedafie along with your name, commmon name of the insects and its special featuresat our email address: btraps.keedafie@gmail.com or direclty message us at our facebook page KEEDAfie- SElfie with Insects. Rahul, I am so proud that you guys made such a fantastic and fun event to raise awareness on the insect. We consider this time as the era of human but as you mentioned, it's era of insect actually. I don't know if I can take a selfie with any insect as I get scared from insects. But if i see a lovely one, I would try it :)

Insects, being a vector for disease to pollinator of flowers, have multiple role in a balanced ecosystem. Due to small size they are overlooked but I am so happy that the KEEDAfie has highlighted the importance in an innovative way.
I have been liking beautiful pictures of many brothers and sisters of this contest. I wish best of luck to them!
    Well done my brother :)

Correctly pointed Prashant. It has become common human tendency to realize the value of everything only after it turns from 'I have' to 'I had'.
    Gotta improve that
