New species of frog in Brazil

by Luiz Bispo | 06-06-2015 13:36 recommendations 0

Have you ever seen the species which are less than 1cm long? Even though climate change has had a huge impact on extinction of these species, seven new species of tiny flogs have been discovered in south-eastern Brazil.

In particular, I would like to introduce Brachycephalus frogs, which have various color and poisonous skin.

Brazil's southern Atlantic coast has unique climate with cloud forest separated by warmer valley, which enables to produce more different species than the Amazon.

The little creatures like Brachycephalus frog are optimized to their small size so that they usually have two or three fingers and toes instead of five ones in most flogs. However, the most different features among Brachycephalus frogs including new species are their skin and color Skin is very rough and has vivid color which represents the deadly poison.

However, it is a huge challenge to find those kinds of species. Interestingly, researchers find frogs with their singing! They would hear long time before they saw them but frogs stop singing once they are closer to them. It could be hard to stealthily approach and catch them.

Meanwhile, tiptoeing scientists are concerned that climate change would have a negative effect on their unique habitats, leading to their extinction.

Therefore, it is the most important to keep them survive and protect their vulnerable environment. In fact, an endeavor has already been made to find new species, which is not yet published. The information from new species is expected to manage conservation and help to take an action
