I still remember that day after my selection for GYELS (Global Youth Eco- Leadership Summit), 2015 when I and Rahul brother planned for Model United Nations (MUN) in Nepal too. For long, we three ambassadors namely Aksana Dallakoti, Rahul Acharya and myself Bindu Bhandari had been planning for MUN in our university. Finally, our dream came into reality and climate change model United Nations (ccMUN) was organized on 17th and 18th July, 2015.
Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation where the participants (delegates) enter the world of diplomacy and negotiate on some pressing global issues learn about the United Nations and international relations. The topic for our MUN was Role of Youth Stakeholders in changing climate (ccMUN). On the basis of application form, 30 delegates were chosen from 5 different colleges including ours. We sent an instruction guideline to all the participants describing the flow of sessions, time schedule, code of conduct, their roles and responsibilities etc.
On 17th July, the session started at 2pm with an informal session reminding the delegates about the mean purpose of this MUN, time and other relevant information. Delegates were seated according to their team. In first day, we had one team discussion followed by a group discussion. Group was homogenous consisting of 5 delegates. There were six groups altogether namely Youths, Political Leaders, NGO/ INGO representatives, Farmers, Businessman and Researchers. Youth, Farmers, NGO/INGO representatives were demanding action for climate change and speaking in favor of the universality of climate change. Contrastingly, businessman and political leaders were giving priority to economy even if it means at the cost of environment and were denying accepting the evidences of climate change. Researchers and the other hand were free to advocate in favor or against the climate change. Team was heterogeneous and consisted of representative from each group. On day 2 we had a final team discussion and each team had to present their resolution paper satisfying the demands and challenges of every team members inclusive of their commitments. Finally certificates were distributed to super active delegates and formally the ccMUN was over.
To our great surprise, the delegates were so curious, enthusiastic and sincere that their involvement throughout the sessions was much more than we expected. They left no stones unturned to enter the real character they were assigned for. At no times we felt that they were just simulating, it was worthy facilitating them in discussions, debates, negotiation and finally drafting a resolution paper. Including indigenous knowledge in researches, introduction of hybrid transportation means in developing countries, green climate funding by industrialized nations, carbon trading, inclusion of youth in national decision making and policy formulation process etc. were the highlights of resolution presented by the teams.
Last but not the least I would like to sincerely thank Tunza eco- generation for giving me an invaluable experience of GYELS MUN through which I became able to implement it here in my university along with my supportive siblings Rahul brother and Aksana sister. Of course, it was more than awesome that we three ambassadors, Rahul brother, Aksana sister and I worked together for making it such a huge success even within our limited physical resources. The feedback of participants was really motivating and rewarding. Thank you The Eco- Minions for collaborating to organize this event, thank you advisor friends and our guests. Thank you all those super cool, exemplary delegates without whom our efforts would mean nothing.
