TILOS: An Energy Autonomous Island project

by | 27-07-2015 23:08 recommendations 0

The island of Tilos, one of the most beautiful places I have been on vacation to, is the first island which aims to become energy autonomous in the near future, through an Hybridic system of production and storing of energy, exclusively by Renewable Energy Sources (RES)

Tilos has an area of 61.5 Km2 and 780 permanent residents.
During the summer, because of tourism, the population increases to several thousand people.

On the island, a photovoltaic power park (0.7 MW) and a wind turbine (0.3MW) will be installed. Simultaneously, a battery system will be constructed to smooth the differences between the production and consumption of energy.

At the same time, in every home a clever energy meter is installed to inform easily the residents about their rate of consumption and thus implement corrective actions to reduce it and simultaneously make savings in their budget.

Today the island is supplied with electricity by an underwater cable, coming from Kos Island, which often causes blackouts and other problems.

The TILOS program, as this program is named, has been included in Horizon 2020, the largest funding program for EU innovation, taking in the phase of evaluating the highest rating among 80 competing projects.

Companies and institutes in seven European countries participate in the program. In Greece, these companies and institutes include the Hellenic Public Power Corporation, the greek electricity company of photovoltaic panels ?Einice? and also WWF Greece.

I believe that such innovative programs open the door to more widespread use of renewable energy and increasing the scale of projects can demonstrate that energy independence from non renewable energy sources, can actually become an everyday reality .

In one of my previous articles on April 14, 201, I reported on a study for WWF Greece for the possibility of self-sufficiency of the country without the use of highly polluting lignite.

Today, in Greece, 40% of the energy is sadly provided by coal. However, 25% of the energy is provided by RES.

I have myself read a lot about the beautiful island of Tilos. I believe that this is an excellent plan which we can also suggest to our governments for implementation in our countries as well.

Thank you so much bro Konstantinos for providing us with this informative article.

I think this is one of the most important steps communities should take. Instead of having a centralized supply of energy, communities must be autonomous and given the independence to run heir energy in whatever way they want it to be. Not only will it discourage the production through coals, which happens to be the central node of the many energy operations, it will open the communities' needs for a more efficient and renewable energy resources. Communities in the coastal areas can maximize the use of their wind energy. Those near waterfalls can use hydropowers while those near the deserts can use solar energy.

Wow, this project sounds really amazing mate!!! This kind of system should be in all islands in the world. =) Could be awesome. Keep it up!! =D

Dear Konstantions, the TILOS program is an example to rest of the world for switching to renewable form of energy. Such projects are likely to have sustainable impacts and much happy that EU is supporting it. Island are beautiful in self and when they are sustainable and eco- friendly it adds the purpose to beauty.
Thank you for sharing this information dear friend :)

Really glad to know about the Tilos Island independent energy mechanism through hybrid renewable energy sources. And hope that Greek's heavy dependence on coal will also be reduced soon. Thanks for sharing.:)

Thanks for sharing the good news. It is really nice that the Greek island of Tilos will become the first Mediterranean island to be powered exclusively by renewable energy sources in the next four years, by installation of a hybrid renewable energy system power station that will both generate and store energy. I was further amazed when I read that authorities are taking special care not to disturb the habitat of the unique avifauna native to the island, and special team is searching for the ideal location for the photovoltaic park and wind turbines that will generate the electricity for the microgrid.
The Tilos program is one of the European Union??s most innovative energy policy projects. Such projects should be set up in many more places.
