|BRAZIL| Farmer's friend- Brazilian opossum!

You used to observe the scary crocodiles with little birds. The crocodile birds are able to stay in crocodile's mouth due to their symbiotic relationship. Is it also possible between human and animal? I would like to introduce the little creature which is helpful for farmers in Brazil.

Among opossums, Brazilian gracile opossums are relatively smaller than other same spices, which are found in Brazil. They have very big –black eyes with pointy nose and thin tale with pink ears. Personally, I associate this animal with some fairy in Harry Potter.

The researchers discovered that these little species like to feed the local soybean pest. The farmers do not need to use a lot of pesticide for their farm where it is located near the forest. In the end, preserving Brazil's Cerrado savanna nature is not only to protect biodiversity but also to benefit farmers.

However, in 2011, as the botanic garden was built this area, the Cerrado was burnt so that many wild animals were died including the climbing opossums. Furthermore, loss of wildlife become worse due to deforestation and emerging agricultures.

Therefore, saving small species including the gracile mouse opossums have been continued and in 2013, the researchers found out these species eat the insects in soybean farms. They still focus on discovering how well the mouse opossums control the pests and expect to find continuous –good effect on farmers.

Thanks for introducing Farmer's friend- Brazilian opossum. It is quite interesting that these little species like to feed the local soybean pest and help in getting rid of lot of pesticides. It's like biological/natural alternative to pesticide.
