A Chit - Chat About Environment and Entertaiment

by | 31-08-2015 20:35 recommendations 0

Movies and songs are kind of entertainment products which are easier to approach all elements of society. Who does never listen to the music or watch a movie on the earth? Nobody except new born baby. From toddlers to elders, they are accustomed to the music. Some of age group are addicted to idols, dramas, movies. Entertainment can be said as a human untold primary needs. Even preachers or monks  find a kind of entertainment which fits to their lifestyle.

Then talking about entertainment, it must be various and there should be an innovation. Because boredom is nature of human. Entertainment must be amusing and fun. It should be easy to be understood and memorable. Those nature are utilized by some educators to create a new type of teaching method. No wonder that there are some educational movies, songs and animations. As the result, sometimes environment topics are included to entertainment products. There are some hollywood movies which blend environment issues with science fiction spices.  I will give you two examples and give a glimpse about the stories.

Lets begin with 1995! ( I know that some of you had not been born on that year, even I was still an innocent kid at that time). Hollywood rolled out a blockbuster titled "Waterworld". It was starred by Kevin Costner, my favorite one (You may search on google or ask to your parents about him hahahaha).

The story is about human life after polar ice caps completed melted. Almost all the land is submerged and most people live on their boat. The focus of the story is an adventure to find a new land.   Like another movie, there should be conflicts among the characters. Yes, on waterworld, main characters are divided into two groups. Despite of having the same goal, one group has a bad intention to dominate the new land and use the resources for their own interest. The interesting aspect of waterworld is visual setting that brings us into an imagination about decline of civilization. The advancement of technology is only a history due to submerging of the land. A book is a rare thing. There are no currency, high institution, government, vegetables or fruits. People on that movie are like refugees who struggle to survive by the remains of the previous civilization. It is quite interesting for reminding us about the effect of global warming which leads to polar ice melting.

Then move to 2004. There is "the day after tomorrow". This movie can be said as reverse story of " waterworld ". In  " waterworld ", global warming causes submerging of all lands while in " the day after tomorrow " it leads to the rebirth of ice age.

The story is focus on how some survivors of extreme climate disaster struggle through the empty cold cities as they are optimist that the ice age will be end soon. (I cannot give some details because I watched this movie a long time ago :) )

Outside Hollywood, there are many movies, novels, comics, animations, songs with environment as the main focus. Some of them are " Japan sinks ", famous novel from Japan and " Only Human " sung by Jason Mraz. You can use them for influence people around you for being care to our earth. But you have to notice that some of them are not really appropriate to children. Parental guide is still needed in this case, so be careful of the contents.

In final paragraph,  " environmental education is not limited on direct campaigns or scientific articles " is my conclusion. We can use any media to convey our messages. So, we do not have to be environment engineer for saving the earth. We can be what we want like movie director, novel author, singer, teacher and we educate people with our own ways. At least, I hope there will be a future talented singer who reads my report and she composes a hits eco song .

Thanks for reading

PS: Eco – game in the previous month event is one of my favorites

I fully agree with you that campaigns , environmental lectures , presentations are not the only means to spread environmental awareness but there can be variety of other more fun loving , interesting media like games , movies , songs, paintings , drama/street plays etc to educate people/make someone realise the need to act towards environment protection. Thanks for an interesting report.
