How to Win Friends and Convert People |
---|
Dear Ecogen and Ambs,
You may wish to understand how to convince your friends to become environmentalists. Now, I have a list of ways that I hope will generate debate. Enjoy! 1. Opinion Leaders As a leader of the environment, why not convince the most popular, the most handsome, the most clever people, people whom people look up to and admire, to change first? Since these people are clique leaders, their cliques and followers will change....if they start to change first. For example, people who have many followers on Instagram should lead the change. Note: their change must be conspicuously promoted. 2. Incentives Humans either respond to the carrot or the stick. So why not try both? Work with school / institutional authorities to implement schemes that can reward people for doing something good for the environment. For example, people can be rewarded for depositing rubbish that can be recycled into a recycling bank. It could also be an exchange for recycled items. People can be rewarded with a dollar for depositing items there if their items are recycled, they can gain extra money. The money is spent from the saved funds allocated for waste disposal. 3. Psychological Economics Use psychological methods to induce people to recycle. For example, Sweden started a lottery to induce people to obey speed limits. If a driver drives at or under the limit, he / she is entered into the lottery. Where does the money come from? Fines from speeders! (http://www.wired.com/2010/12/swedish-speed-camera-pays-drivers-to-slow-down/) People can be induced to recycle through lotteries that encourage them to recycle. The lottery aggregates risk and reduce the money need to pay each person to recycle. So, what do you think? Give me your thoughts! B/ :)

Thanks for interesting tips. Initially when I had this challenge of getting people mainly teenagers for my campaigns , I applied the incentive strategy and it worked. When they came to know , they would be getting give aways or souveniers and certificates , more and more participants started coming , taking interest and soon joined my mission and got interested in working for environment protection

Great report Bernard. I did like the psichological economics. For sure Brazil could apply the same method as Sweden did. =)
