Training workshop on climate change and REDD+

by | 13-09-2015 13:45 recommendations 0

DAY 2!!!

Started with the concept of REDD+,we came to know more about it.. During COP11(Montreal 2005),the concept of RED was emerged. And was formally introduced during COP13(Bali 2007).With incorporation of ?Forest Conservation And Enhancement Of Carbon Stock? into REDD in COP15(Copenhegan 2009), REDD+ came in scene.REDD+ encourages developing country parties to contribute to mitigation actions in the forest sector by undertaking above mention activities

   REDD- Reducing emission from deforestation

               Reducing emission from forest degradation

REDD+-Sustainable management of forest

             Conservation of forest carbon stock

             Enhancement of forest carbon stock.

.While talking about Nepal Readiness in REDD+ , Nepal became a FCPF member at 1st and then submitted readiness plan idea note on April 2008.Then further prepared R-PP with the help of world Bank financial support and finally approved by FCPF on 2012.The proposed REDD+ activities in Nepal are intended to position the country to participate and receive benefits from all possible international financing mechanisms for forest carbon and other related environmental sevices, which is fast emerging mechanism in climate change context.

Forest plays important role as sink of carbon dioxide  and iscost effective means than the other. about 20% of the global carbon dioxide emission is sequestrated by standing forest. The practice of community forest management(CFM) is well demonsrated in Nepal.More than 1475 community forest user groups. This has make Nepal a leading country institutionalizing concept of CFM in national forest policy. However ,despite the success of CFM in Nepal, forest degradation continues.Hence, there is a prime need to aware people about climate change and forest role in reducing impacts.Further the presence of different types of forest like community, leasehold, scientific, religious etc depicts good opportunity for Nepal to take benefit from REDD+..

CFM not only provides environmental benefits but also improves local welfare as it becomes a great source of income and reduces rural poverty. Nepal is setting example for other countries by leading in CFM practices but as you said , inspite of successful CFM , forest degradation continues -implies still there is a need to spread awareness to wider mass about significant role by forests in mitigating climate change impacts. Thanks for your report, Sandhya.

Community forests are true protagonist in our context. It is best method to celebrate diversity and utilise it responsibly. Also Community forests are best way to sequestrate carbon released in world.
