TREE PLANTING SESSION

by | 10-11-2015 22:13 recommendations 0

On the 7th of November, I co-organised a Ghaf tree-sapling planting session along with the "Give-A-Ghaf" organisation in Dubai for my youth group We Care's members.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, We Care members set out to plant tree saplings in a nursery in Dubai. By 9am, the young eco-warriors gathered at the entrance of the nursery to register for the event.

The event taught all of us the step-by-step process of planting the saplings. We started off  by taking out the undamaged and healthy seeds from the Ghaf tree stalks. Next we emptied out all the seeds into one container and wrote our names on the bio-degradable packets in which we were to fill soil. In the meanwhile, many people present there were keen to know about Tunza when they saw my T-shirt and banner. I explained to them about it and how to become its member and also about the exposure we get through this platform.

After this, we walked to the planting site and learnt how to plant the seeds in a way in which the both the plumule and radical have sufficient space to grow

(by making a hole in the soil till the middle of the index finger).

After planting the seeds, I took the members to the main nursery that was full of grown ghaf trees. I informed them the importance of the Ghaf trees in UAE as a local variety and how planting Ghaf trees contributes towards energy conservation in the UAE.

Desalinization Plants are the main source of water in the region. Ghaf trees require minimal amount of water for growth and nutrition and also help in carbon dioxide reduction in the atmosphere. If less water is used, less energy will be used up in these desalinization plants for water production.

The young environmental enthusiasts went back home with not only the experience of Ghaf tree-planting but most importantly the purpose and vital importance of the Ghaf tree:)

Thanks for reading:)

@Rohan-Yes, Al Barari Farm is a miracle in the middle of a vast desert. I too have been going there for more than 2 and a half years for ghaf tree-planting and it still receives a large number of students registering for the event. Thanks for your comment, Rohan:)

Planting Ghaf tree saplings rather collecting the potent seeds first is an excellent idea Manav.
This nursery in Barari is the biggest & greenest in the region & I'm amazed by its big trees right in the middle of desert.
Past two years I did the same activity & felt satisfied. I can feel your elated state. Well done!
