A cracker-free Diwali, maybe?

by | 14-11-2015 01:08 recommendations 0

Diwali is a festival of lights and the symbol of victory of good over evil. Indians celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and cheerfulness. But, the purity and spirit of this festival is overcome by the huge amount of pollution caused by the bursting of crackers by people of all age- young, and old. You can see little girls and older women standing around and lighting various kinds of crackers on this occasion.
So, this is a very common practice done by Indians in this festival. The amount of noise pollution triggered by the crackers not only hurts human ears, but, also harms the animals and scares them, especially the stray dogs- which are in a large number in India.
It is a reason for hypertension, stress, headache and other problems.
Not only noise pollution, but, also air pollution is a side effect of bursting the colourful crackers. It is very difficult to describe the scene of night night sky after the firework show is over. It is just frightening.
Patna, my city, is the second-most-polluted in India after the capital city New Delhi. It's very alarming and sad.

Thanks for the comment and updates friends. :) You guys make me aware on this issue! Hope other people can get to know more about it. Like Salil said, of course we can use the crackers, because it's hilarious tradition, but we need to know what's bad for the environment and try to use less. :)

Yagya, first of all Happy Children's day. Nice article and very good observation. Crackers dont help anybody.
Then again its a matter of human satisfaction and joy and to attain the same we have become destructive.
But Hope next Diwali ..less crackers are burnt...& more awareness is spread!

Diwali is a festival of lights, symbolising victory of good over evil. It should be celebrated in good spirit by enjoying get togethers, sharing meals and visiting friends and family rather than wasting money & polluting air by burning crackers. Though many groups and media houses promoted pollution free Diwali this year and relatively less crackers were burnt but still they were a lot and there is long way to go . Let's keep promoting pollution-free Diwali or Christmas. Thanks for your report, Yagya.

Happy Diwali to you Yagya & All the readers. This is a sacred festival of lights, Decoration, Sweets, Meeting with friends & relatives.
Bursting of crackers is very common but this time as reported by Indian Newspapers their usage was a bit lower:

We could try to make environmentally friendly firecrackers, which do not give off as much vapour.

Agreed, the noise and air pollution are terrible. In Barbados we are not allowed to use firecrackers except at New Years, and even then, only certified people are allowed.

I agree with you. The noise is deafening. In Nigeria, use of fireworks during celebration was banned because criminals take advantage of the noise to fire real guns at their victims. I hope more people will come to disown the use of fireworks.

I agree with you Yagya. We also face the same situation during the Christmas period and new year period even with police orders and restrictions. But more and consistent awareness with local actions will help us overcome this challenge. Thanks for the report.

I agree. It is sad. But what's more sad is that not a lot of people know this. I might not be in India but I feel that we all have to try our best to make individuals more aware of their environment and the harm we do to it daily. The eradication of pollution would not happen overnight but I believe that with time, as more citizens get more knowledge on the state of their environment and how to preserve it we can have positive changes. May God help us.
