Ghana Ranked Second in Open Defecation |
---|
While a university student, a led an open defecation education program in Cape Coast, Ghana. It was upsetting to see both parents and kids defecating at the sea shores. Not just was I concerned about their health but I was very worried about the ecological disturbance they could cause to species that habitat along the shores. During the education program in 2014, I realized that most houses do not have toilet facilities which was the major contributor to the open defecation. However, it was also an act of ignorant by the community members as most of them did not know any consequences of open defecation on their health. Additionally, community dwellers were reluctant in using public toilet facilities due to the amount charged for using the place. During 2015 World Toilet Day, Ghana is ranked second in Open Defecation, announced by United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) – Ghana's Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) officer. It has been estimated that five million Ghanaian do not having access to any toilet facility and about 15 million people practicing open defecation – which could result from water unavailability to households in some cities in Ghana. According to the UNICEF WASH officer, the Upper East Region of Ghana has the highest open defecation rate with 89 percent, followed by Northern Region with 72 percent and Upper West Region with 71 percent. Additionally, coastal areas in Ghana also records open defecation cases as most coastal communities lack toilet facilities and sees no harm in defecating at the sea shores. In other regions of Ghana, open defecation is recorded due to increasing number of households without toilet facilities and people failing to pay money to visit public provided toilet. This situation is causing severe health impacts, particularly on growing children and increasing cholera and diarrhoea cases in Ghana. Sanitation issues has cost the country $79 million a year and has claimed over 200 lives, this year. This has given rise to a major call for increase in government interventions towards provision of toilet facilities and as well the support of non-governmental organizations in the curb of this situation. |

shocked by the photo :( Ghana should take more efforts to build up basic sanitation facilities for their own health.

Joshua, this is another shameful situation in Ghana, India & elsewhere in the world. Not much has been done to correct the grim situation.
Open defecation is a curse to the society & causes violence to women as well.

That is a shame! Today I saw an article and it says that in world there is more people with mobile phone than people with basic sanitation. =( Thanks for the report mate. Lets work to solve it!

Its not as easy as it might seem. As an environmentalist, it is a disgrace to me and the entire citizens of Ghana. Government hasn't really done much to curb this situation but I personally think the free open defecation dream can only be achievable through a collective approach - where all citizens understand the implication of open defecation and put a stop to it.
During my water project discussion with Adansi East District Assembly, it came up and I think it will be involved in my upcoming project.

I completely agree with u @Arushi Madan..it is unhygienic!! It causes epidemic like Polio and is also a cause of violence to women. I hope the situation gets better soon ! Bdw thanx Joshua for d report - an eye opener for all

It is pathetic that absolute minimum necessity like toilets are not sufficiently available in countries like India and Ghana. Governments must allocate budget for these basic facilities and must consider the plight of general public and the serious health risks posed by open defecation. It not only gives unpleasant look but is also very very unhealthy for humans, animals and the whole Earth. Thanks fr your report .

So disappointing to know...& its more concerning that my country India still ranks no. 1 in Open defecation!
More then 595 million people dont use toilets. 65,000 tonnes of poo is excreted outside. One in every two people use toilet.
But now d scenario is changing with our visionary administrator PM Narendra Modi..who has initiated a revolutionary Movement of Swach Bharat (Clean India) and for d same he is constructing toilets in schools and in rural India. His dream is to make India defation free by 2019 by constructing 12 Crore toilets. He could be an example for various develop. Countries with his work in 1 & 1/2 years & his political will for this matter.
But at this moment ...it's a bitter truth that 'Toilet Dream' is a dream :(
