UAE has added another feather to its environmental cap as it replaces conventional street lamps in the emirate of Abu Dhabi with energy efficient LED street lights.
LED is the most eco-friendly and cleanest way of illumination as it is a digital light with power saving solutions.
Retrofitting the conventional lights with LED fixtures will reduce the average annual spending to Dh44 million. It will save nearly Dh 3 billion over the next two decades. The Abu Dhabi government is going to retrofit 350,000 street lights on Abu Dhabi Island. This new energy conservation initiative will lead to more than 80% of cost savings.
Long operational life span of LED lights helps achieve even more energy efficiency especially large scale and when thinking in terms of urban infrastructure projects, such as cities, railroads and airports. LED lights need to be replaced much less frequently, about once in 14 years or so. The new lighting system will also reduce light pollution, and eye strain for motorists.
In addition, tree growth and insect cycles are negatively affected with too much lighting, and this eventually harms the natural ecosystem. Conventional lights are considered too bright to dazzle the vision of motorists, making it harder for drivers to focus.
Durability of LED lights makes it all the more cost effective. Besides no toxicity it is 100% recyclable which in turn reduces the carbon footprint. LED lights are resistant to the external conditions, irrespective of harsh weather, wind , rain or external vandalism, construction or manufacturing sites. LED lights are a boon towards energy conservation of our planet.
It is a giant leap ahead for Abu Dhabi by integrating the installation of LED lights in its sustainable lighting strategy.

Even though LED lights are expensive but they pay back their cost over a period of time. Their life span is long & the best part is that they are fully sustainable.
Thanks for the report, Manav.
