Algae Bloom in Seychelles

Algae Bloom

Algae bloom is a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae (typically microscopic) in a water system - can either be in freshwater or marine environment.
Algae bloom is caused by typically only a small number (or one) of phytoplankton species. Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) are algal bloom events involving toxic or harmful phytoplankton such as dinoflagellates and diatoms.
Negative impacts of HAB includes:
  • the production of neurotoxins which cause mass mortality in fish, seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals
  • human illness or death via consumption of seafood contaminated by toxic algae
  • mechanical damage to other organisms, such as disruption of epithelial gill tissues in fish, resulting in asphyxiation.
Seychelles experienced algae bloom, during the last days of October 2015 large amount of dead fish (400KG daily) mainly coral reef fish and other marine species were washed onshore in various parts of the main islands of Seychelles, another major occurrence observed was the change in colour of the sea - in some areas were yellowish, red to dark green.

Seychelles authorities advised the public to reduce the amount of fish consumption to avoid any health problems while they investigate the cause of the sudden death of fish.

The Seychelles authorities send samples to Reunion Island and France to find out what exactly is going on, if its toxic algae or lack of oxygen in the water.

Local tests have identified one of the plankton to be a genus cochlodinium which is toxic.

Seychelles is still awaiting further results from France and Reunion.

IT is a serious threat to water resources. Hope your report will make people aware and work for it.
